West Branch of the Susquehanna

Been flyfishing this all summer in my spare time. Have been averaging 8-10 fish a night. Just wading down the river.

Last night caught 8 smallmouth and 1 unexpected 26" musky.

Wolly buggers in black, olive, brown, and poppers work best.

pxatim, what section of the river do you normally fish? I fish Hog Back alot and pretty much the whole way down I-80 skipping over all the slack water in Downtown Clearfield, but yes any streamer produces good number on a variety of fish, I landed a 17" walleye on the fly rod ealier in the year closer to Curwensville, near the old railroad bridge.

Sculpin... I fish pretty much the entire stretch from the dam down to I-80. Just depends where I feel like going on what night. I usuallyt work till 5 and am on the river by 5:30 almost every night.

Hogback is nice water, I've always done well in there down to the old rail road bridge (which is now rails to trails). Then I skip down to where that little strip mall is (Bayer clothing). Just up the road there is a dirt lot I park there and forge a path through the brush to the river. There is some fast water there and down from that are some deep pools (waist deep in the summer when the water is normally only to your calf). You can fish that the whole way down into Clearfield to the Hyde Bridge with good results. Then I skip down to the raftsmans dam by JG and fish that down to the Railroad Bridge. I caught a 4lb smallie about 2 weeks ago.

But if you fish from Irvin Park in Curwensville to Hogback you have a good chance of hooking up with a walleye or musky. C.A.R.P. started stocking walleye in the lake a couple years ago. And ever since then they're starting to show up in the river alot more. I believe it's still catch and release in the **** for walleye. So I look to see a big payoff in the next couple years with that.

Yeah earlier in the year. The river just gets to warm and low throughout the summer. I occasionally pick one up here and there though. Once the temps get down it should be alot better. They're getting ready to stock it again this friday Oct. 5 with rainbows.

Been doing well for trout this past week. Not going to say where... last night watched a guy and his little girl fishing over a group of 10-15 trout and she was having a blast.

From this evening... caught on a single egg. Had a pheasent tail nymph dropper and was catching smallies on that. Good time.. we get some rain and cooler temps. And it should pick up... nothing new though. It's about the same everywhere.

All the walleye fishing in the Lake is still catch and release.

I've talked to people that have caught walleye as far down as the raftsmans **** in Clearfield. Though they are caught more frequently from hogback up to the **** in curwensville.

I really wish you could fish right at the outlet of the ****. There has got to be some awesome fishing up there, because it's always been off limits, I don't think you're aloud to get within 100yds of the spill way. At least where the wire is that goes across the channel thats how far away it looks.

You can go to the bait store... or I have memberships here also. It's $5 lifetime membership and all the money goes towards future projects or buying fish to stock in the lake/river. Meetings are the last tuesday of every month at the Curwensville Moose.

The walleye in the river and Curwensville Lake do not have to be released.  The organization (CARP) that stocks them tells you to practice catch and release.  To my knowledge there have not been any studies to determine if the walleye they stock are reproducing naturally.  Other waters in the area have no significant walleye reproduction (Glendale, Sayers, W. Branch Susquehanna), so my opinion is that unless CARP keeps stocking walleye the population can't sustain itself.  In that case there is no reason to throw back walleye because they are not reproducing and are being maintained by stocking.  They should start stocking fingerling or fry like the PAFBC does at Glendale, which is cheaper than stocking mature fish.

Not sure if i should be telling you guys this or not, haha jk jk, but the fishing is getting a lot better down river too.  i'm a little farther down river than you guys are, and the smallmouth are really trying to make a comeback, well, not really a comeback but you know what i mean.  trout fishing is getting better too.  i think a lot of the trout stocked in clearfield move down river rather quickly.  a little different fishing downstream than you guys have up there.  the powerplant in shawville really congregates the fish wherever some cold water hits the river, but where its warm, man, the catfish haha.  haven't fished lumbercity area in a few years, hoping to get back up there next season sometime, maybe i'll run into some of you guys in the future, if you don't mind fishing with a young gun that is haha.  best of luck to you guys, nice reading about some things that i actually have some first hand experience in.

I have fished down below the truckstop, and thats farthest downstream I've been. I have always want to try catty fishing down at Shawville though. I'm still a young buck in my book, I'm only a 1/4 century old.

May the holes in your net be no larger than the fish in it.

I have a buddy whose land runs down to the river by Appalachain Wood, it's a bi*ch getting to the river from there but there's some good bassin down that stretch. It's been a couple years since I fished at the power plant....but man oh man are there some monsters in there. Fished with large shiners bouncin em off the bottom below the dam. Something hit my line so hard it about jerked my rod out of my hand. Never saw what it was. Caught 16-17" perch and monster carp in there also. Need to hit that up this winter when everythings iced over.
