Two legal bucks got a pass

It was an exciting evening last night 10/1/07.  Got to my stand in 2B at 4:45 and had a 7 point and an 8 point at twenty yards feeding on acorns.  I have seen both of these bucks sveral times while scouting and on my trail cams.  They have been traveling together all summer long.

The 8 is a nice buck and I was at full draw on him but just couldn't do it.  There are several better bucks that frequent this little woodlot.

Saw 5 does and 11 turkeys too.  At 6:30, the same 7 point came in again and stood underneath my ladder stand and smelled the ladder.  Pretty cool.  Never spooked.

Good first day of hunting for me.  Best of luck to everyone as well.

Congrats on giving him the pass.  Hopefully he will make it to next year and be even bigger.  Definitely sounds like a good night.

With the way my work schedule is now, I would of dropped the first legal 1 that came by.

Why Hardcore?  I am seriously not poking fun at you, but too often people seem to feel like less of a hunter/man if they do not fill there buck tag?  Shoot the one you want, but don't ever "settle" because of societal pressure.  If you wish to shoot a smaller buck and that makes you happy then do it by all means and enjoy the moment for the rest of your life.  But to "just shoot the first legal deer" because of a work schedule seems like you are trying to prove something.  If you are looking for venison in the freezer there is no shame in shooting does. I do not think that hunters need to be trophy hunters to be outstanding sportsmen.  I do however feel that all sportsmen should strive to accomplish there own personal goals (from shooting a wall hanger to teaching children to just getting out for a relaxing stroll through the woods) rather than settling for a societal expectation.  Good luck to you and have a great season, even if it is on limited time.  Griffon.

Cut & wrapped a 8 pt. from Oakmont this morning. The new knives & cuttin boards worked well. Was finnished up by 4:45 am & my hands didn't even get cold. Would've been a good night to let it hang but didn't need a bunch of coyote around.

Yesterday morning, I passed on the 8 point from the picture I posted a week or two ago. Just couldnt do it. Later in the day, I nearly got a shot at the one i've been waiting for. He's a very nice 8, that i've had my eye on for a few months. He walked to the edge of a clover field I was hunting, and then walked off in a different direction. Not sure what made him change his mind, since he obviously was not spooked.

My work schedule is not going to allow me much time to hunt this season, but that doesnt mean I feel like shooting the first legal buck that comes along. This month, my company is sending me to a seminar in Florida the first week of November. When I heard this, I seriously felt sick. I dont want to miss that week, but there will be other seasons, and other oppurtunities. If someone really needs to kill a deer, kill a doe. Let those little bucks walk.

This is what I miss most about the FishUSA.com's Discussion Boards...the archery reports and stories!!

I took a mature doe Monday morning @ 7:40am.  Rage broadheads do ugly things to whitetails.

Good luck to everyone this upcoming season!!!!

Nice job Hed,  I agree that there are definitely somethings I miss about the boards and the archery talk is one of them.  I whacked a couple of does on Saturday, after I clipped a limb and missed a toad of a buck at 8 am.  Oh well, it's early and there is a lot of game to be played.  Have a great season Hed, Griffon

Good for you dpms.   It's a good feeling passing on deer no matter what sex.  It's nice to enjoy your time observing.  Hunting is not shooting and shooting is not hunting, well, it shouldn't be.  The season is still young.

Sure was quiet tonight.  I could hear dogs barking from over a mile away.

went out first day and seen 8 total 7 doe and 1 buck no shot at the buck...didnt really get a good look at him eaither. i passed up a bunch of baby does. as they walked by me i felt me mouth drooling for tender meat ( last year i misjudged the size of a doe and shot her she was a little one not going to let that happen again)

I also drew back on a huge fox.... then it crossed my mind that fox is not in season yet... so i had to let her walk.... i saw 2 foxes on saturday i usualy see 2 a year not 2 a day...

monday i saw the biggest doe i have ever seen in my life... i would put money on it that she weighed 180-200 pounds..but she outsmarted me

How much does a furtaker license cost these days?  I have thought about getting one these past couple of years because I have seen several foxes while archery hunting but I forgot to check on the cost this year when getting my other licenses.
Was it a red or grey fox that you saw?

Been archery hunting for a couple weeks, started in MD and passed on a bunch of smaller does, found the one I wanted and it tastes great.  Missed a nice buck the first day of PA and passed on a bunch of does, saw the nice buck I am after again last night but too dark for shot.  Was stuck in the tree while deer fed below me.  Got to love sitting out there watching game, never know what you will see or what story you will have after a day in the woods.

So far this year I have seen 3 different bear, bobcat, lots of turkey, a bunch of coon, an howl, and tons of squirrels.

they were both red foxes... im hoping ill see them again when they are in season but the chances of that are slim

i saw a bobcat while i was hunting also... i heard a really loud noise so i looked down the hill and there was a bobcat about 200 yards away movin deadfalls off the quad trail. lol

(not your kind of bobcat but still a bobcat)

If you don't already, sounds like you need to take a small camcorder out with you in the woods.  The smaller ones today aren't much bigger than a small digital cam and have decent quality for home viewing.  My wife gets tired of seeing all the deer I get on film but she loves it when I get an owl, hawk, yote or fox on film.

Have not been able to hunt my spot after Tuesday.  The south wind is killing me.  The woodlot is so small and stand sites are limited so I am pretty much screwed until we get a wind shift.

EHD wiped out the population on the farm I hunt in Greene county.  Well. I'm sure there are a couple still around, but the disease got quite a few.

Sad, sad.  Another farm I hunt during the rut is on the Greene/Washington line.  We have had almost a complete kill now with no relief in sight with this warm weather.

I have a backup farm in Washington as well that as of now has not been hit.  I have not been down there yet but will probably go there during the early muzzleloader season to look around a bit and prepare some stand sites.  Looks like that is where I will be spending my time in early November this year.
