making your own beads

I want to find a way to make a bead with scent. I was thinking of making a rubber bead with a hollow center where I can inject some roe scent. This way they "hold on" longer. Any thoughts?

i fish with beads, in one of the pittsburgh papers they said trout beads were illegal to use. they say the fish bites the bead and when you yank back you snag the fish. i have never foul hooked a fish with a bead, but look into that before you get too involved with beads or at least know the risk you run. like i said i read that article and i still use them. pretty cool idea you have though good luck with it.

If you run the hook 2" or less from the bead you will rarely if ever foul hook a fish. I never fouled hooked a fish with a bead either. I have missed many, many fish because cautious steelies spit it very quickly. I never have that problem with pink worms But the bead gets hit alot more. Im getting quicker on the hookset though. Practice makes perfect. I have to "practice" soon Or im gonna loose my friggin mind.

I fish for steel in the salmon river ny only and I try to get up there at least 20 days a year. From thanksgiving till march. My favorite time is mid winter. I love the snow and less people.

Technically they are illegal in NY also, you are fishing with a bare hook.If you are fishing them right the DEC may not mess with you.I have a good friend that is a DEC officer in NY and he will not bother you as long as you are not snagging fish.As far as PA goes I have went thru the Reg's several times and can not find anything about them being illegal. In a fly fishing only section I usually put a small ,16 or18, soft hackle behind the bead, instead of a bare hook.Like as stated above ,if you keep the hook within 1-2" of the bead most will be hooked in the mouth.Try getting some Mustad Activate, and rub it on the bead it seems to work well on the SR,Erie fish it doesn't seem to make a differance. If anyone comes across in the regs where it says beads are illegal please post it.

How about a bead that easily comes off and on without cutting your leader?...thats what I'd be more interested in.

Made up about a dozen of these on egg hooks..
Took fine brass wire and wrapped the bead to the hook.
Then I filled the bead hole with epoxy..
They seem to stay on pretty good....

I need to clean up the hook on the little red hook, size 14...

how about a tiny barrel swivel with a few inch leader coming off of it with your hook, and then just a rubber scented single egg pulled over your hook, up your line, and over the tiny barrel swivel up from your hook.  the barrel swivel will hold it from slipping up and down your line.1. it's cheap. 2. it's easy. 3. you can change colors easily with out taking your hook off to change.  and as a side thought, beeds are hard and i find lothargic steelies are quick to spit them.  a rubber egg is softer and feels more natural.  i think it's worth a shot...  on top of everything else, there's your scent.... if you really wanted to make a project out of it now, soak the single rubber eggs in fresh spawn and they will absorb a natural scent.  man, i might just have to try this one out.  see what happens when we all colaborate and ask questions, it gets everybody thinking.  you gotta love it...

the bead on the hook looks good and sounds good, however it doesn't seem to find home often. a lot of missed takes fishing them with a fly rod and a pin. 1.5" above the hook has resulted in 99% of fish hooked inside the mouth, usually in the top or corner of the jaw. i think with it on the hook it pulls out of the mouth without haveing a chance to turn and bury into the jaw, leaving a lip hooked fish that's going to pull loose. #12 raven or #10 kamasans work great.

    have a nice day.

have you ever tried tying that same bead fly on your line upside down?  guaranteed to produce more hook to jaw drive...  just think, when you go to set, that hook will gauge right in to that kype, instead of just lipping the bottom jaw. you might want to use a snell knot for most stability. snell knots are great for turned eye hooks...

pan, What we are saying is put on a small swivel 2inches above the hook then slide the rubber bead onto the swivel. This way we can change them without retying.
