how to fish otsego lake?

im thinking of going to otsego lake tomorrow or maybe early next week.  how deep of water should i be fishing, how far down should i be fishing?  jigging or tipups?  i want to catch a trout on purpose but cant seem to do so.  are regular shiners ok or do i need smelt or something?

if at first you dont succeed... blow it up.

you want organic? well then shut the &^$() up and eat a *$&#*( squirrel.

well i went to otsego yesterday and had no luck at all. 4 of us went and had 20 tip ups out and not one fish. there were other people out there that did catch some nice lakers. sucks to get skunked. i will go back again before the winters over to try again because i know there are some nice fish in there.

i went with a guy from work yesterday.  we were fishing in 150 feet of water.  about 10 mins after he got his first tipup in he caught a 23 inch laker.  about 2 hours later i got a 25 incher and an hour later he got a 26 incher.  there was a group of about 8 guys next to us who caught 1 24 inch laker.  they were using shiners we were using 6 inch suckers about 4 feet off the bottom.

good to hear you caught some nice ones craveman. when we went last wednesday we were using shiners and fishing anywhere from 1 foot off the bottom to only 10 feet under the ice. we were at 3 mile point and in about 100-150 foot of water. maybe next time i should try some suckers. where did you get the suckers?

theres a guy in little falls that sells them out of his house but hes hard to get ahold of.  they are cheaper at ganer mountain though if you are close to there.  i think 4.50 a half dozen and we paid 11 a dozen but luckily i can reuse all the ones thatdidnt get hit by fish.

down on river road.  you have to call him first to see if hes there.  he wants 5 a dozen for med shiners, 6 a dozen for large shiners, and 11 for suckers.  i use 2 size 16 trebles one tied to the line and the other a sliding one on the line.  the tied one i put halfway between the dorsal fin and the head and the other halfway between the fin and the tail.  i use small hooks cause it doesnt damage the bait much.  i can usually get a few trips out of the same bait unless a fish hits it.  i went to otsego again today with a guy from work.  he lost one on a handline and i caught a 19 incher on a tipup.  had to leave early cause i signed up for overtime for this afternoon.  there was one other guy on the lake who had a keeper sized one.

    his number is 315 823 9446
    fatheads 2.00 a dozen
    rosy reds 2 a dozen
    emerald shiners 3.5 a dozen
    med shiners 5 a dozen
    lg shiners 6 a dozen
    suckers 11 a dozen

i usually buy my bait there unless im going to utica for something anyways since his slightly higher prices still save me money on gas.  his large shiners are cheaper than everywhere else though
