I was slammin the crappie today at misery all day long. About 2pm, two guys walk up about 20 yards from me and start punching holes with a gas auger. I couldn't buy a crappie after that, just small gills. I packed it up and left an hour later when they decided to punch more holes around everyone. I have a gas auger and will use it over deep water and thick ice but when you are in 6ft of water you are just gonna spook fish, espcecially crappie. If you don't want to hand drill, I recommend one of the cordless drill attachments for a hand auger. I have one and it works great.

gas augers scare the fish, they are for the lazy. if u want to punch holes, just get a smaller diameter hand auger.

cweb, i gotta vex! and thank all of you for your input. but dave gens uses a power auger and he is the best there is plain and simple. and ive seen him drill three holes and catch MONSTER crappie as soon as he baited his pole. i think any noise an the ice scares the fish a little but they will settle down and return and get caught.

I'd rather lug a cooler full of beer 400 yrds out onto the ice than one of those heavy gas augers...

Get both a hand auger and a power auger.  Save the power auger for the days that warrant it.  My experiance power augers and other noise shuts the crappie fishing down.

we never have a problem with the power making to much noise and screwing up the crappie.but we fish 36fow most of the time..we find jumping on the ice sumthimes gets them biting again...

in extremely shallow water a gas auder can be trouble. off summerheim we used to drill six or eight sets of holes that fit our hut w/gas, we put a tip-up in one hole at each set. once the crappy get started away we go. one idiot and a gas auger can shut the whole thing down, but once you get in 6 feet or more, thumping feet are far more problematic. i've watched on a camera and the fish spooked in 20+ off the dock with one clod but the auger didn't seem to have the same affect???

Don't share your views about the gas augars. they probably outnumber hand drill ones 50 to 1.Ive used both for many years.I will bet anyone i can drill a hundred holes to their 3 with the old mora;s. Ive had my strikemaster lazer mag now for 8 years now same blades same rope no problems fires on 2nd or 3rd pull. Ive ive also noticed and my freezer does tooo it doesnt seem to matter tothe fish. Just got back from misery bay 6 to 8 fow caught many crappies and gills and everyone i mean everyone were using power augars!!!!!!!
One thing i do do is drill alot of holes when i 1st get there and move to the different holes.just a few years ago we got real winters - temps for weeks ice 15 to 30 inches youd almost need ann extesion on the augar. those winter are the reason alot of older guys have the power augurs.

I think also the foot traffic on the ice shuts em down more than the augars. At misery bay all you hear all day is sleds and huts being dragged all over the ice.Lots on noise!!! I also try to stay out to the outer edges of any pack of huts always seem to work for me. Even after ive drilled all the holes with the strikemaster!!!!!!These are just opinions mine.Im sure ther are cases were it may shut em down.I just havnt expierenced it.
All the pro tourneys thousands of guys all using power augars all catching fish. HMMMM

if you have ever been in a swiming pool and under water and someone hollars for you, YOU WILL NOT HEAR IT ! an auger blade wheather hand driven or gas driven makes the same noise cutting through the ice, the noise from the engine is not transfered through the auger shaft. I have caught fish while friends where drilling 2 feet away. there is much more noise from peoples kids running back and forth on the ice, guys dragging sleds, droping equipment on the ice, and so on. and in most cases a gas model is faster, not every is a speed borer with a hand model, the longer you are cranking the longer you are making noise

You may not hear anything while underwater, but you are not a fish. they are the masters of their enviorments. i have seen the ill effects (or is it affects?) of excessive noise on the camera screen. just like anything else, its not a 100 percent sure thing. but would you really want to risk scaring away a trophy fish.

i feel that the shallower you are fishing, the more stealthy you need to be.

like I said its not the noise from the motor, it's the noise from the blades cutting the ice. and the less time the blades are cutting ice the less noise there will be underwater. i was out tuesday the bite was fair, then someone 60 yds away started using a spud bar to open old holes and the sound was reverbarating back into the shanty like someone beating in a drum. it was loud, and the bite was shut down instantly for a good half hour. i drilled new holes and moved [with gas auger ] earlier and caught fish within 5 minutes

While I agree that the Ice Gator is a nice power head (quiet, no need to worry about gas, etc.), that bad boy is heavy! The power head is 27 lbs. with lead acid batteries, and 19 lbs. with Lithium Ion batteries. This doesn't include the weight of the auger, which would be between 6 and 10 lbs. My Nils Master 8" power auger weighs 19 lbs. altogether, is very fast, and sips fuel.
