P. I. Bay ICE CONDITIONS & FISHING REPORTS

Hello fishermen & women, the Alaskan here. headed out today and fished off 2nd parking lot of the P.I. park. there were quite of few fishermen for a Friday morning. I went for just 3 hours (had to work), only got 2 keepers (perch). I moved three times. In the shallower water could see fish, just weren't bitting. I don't know how the rest of the group was doing, didn't asked to be honest with you. I did notice that they were doing alot of moving as well. The ice is real good, right around 7-7 1/2" thick and it was making ice, it was cold this morning especially with the wind chill.
Going to head out in the morning again.

Ill be pounding the snow covered sidewalks tomorrow door to door but I will be hitting the bay on sunday.
Be nice to find a few keepers for a change.
Try as i may I dont always come home with fish. Some days it doesnt matter as its just nice to get out there and kill time doing what I like to do but bringing home lunch would be nice fer a change. lol

It is really hard to say where to go, I only got two as well. It seems it was slow for everyone today. Part of me wants to go back to where I was, 70% wants to go to Niagara boat launch.

was at chestnut yesterday (about 300+ yrds out north-west of the main pack) for a pretty good day on the ice. every 15 minutes or so all poles would start goin for about 1-2 minutes and then be quiet for another 15 min. Lots of action - lots of dinks, managed a dozen nice keepers and lost 2 hawgs nose-bumps on the hole - doh!!

minnies w/ float about 1-2" off the bottom and root-beer colored rubber shrimp jigs tipped with spikes were the ticket

good day on the ice which was thick and solid 6-7+ in

Were you guys out on Misery this afternoon?  Bite was slow but consistent.  Once I caught a couple crappie on the jig and maggot, I immediately switched over to minnows.  Forget about 8" gills when the crappie are hitting.  They were picky on size though.  The majority of my emeralds were on giant size.  Had to search around to find the smaller ones in the bucket.  Caught enough to keep me happy though.  Sounded like others were catching some as well, but hard to tell when everyone is holed up in their shanties.  Heard of a nice steelhead landed too from one of the shanties further out in the bay.  Was a nice day to be out, but difficult to keep from icing over unless flip the cover down on my frabill.

Fished yesterday from before daylight until almost dark in 23 fow. Moved once then set up on them pretty well. Ended up with a limit and about 80 throw backs. Most keepers were between 9-12". Deadsticked emeralds and hali rigged Kastmasters with minnow heads did the damage.w_w.

If it has fins and gills, I'm there.

Fished the head (2nd lot) 1-29 2 dink perch in 3 1/2 hours ice was good.Moved to misery and picked up a few gills before dark. 1-30 fished misery all day 6+ hours 1/2 dozen nice crappies & about as many good gills.many throw backs. One fish on tip ups in 2 days,2 weeks ago most fish caught were on tip ups.  Ice is growning 1-29 on misery 8in. 1-30 on misery 10 1/2 inches.I was suprized how much open h2o was present friday, a large portion of the channel from the city all the way to P.I. was open, west peir was also open h2o.Sat nothing was open.Ice formed fast, nice & smooth, like glass with little snow on top.Make sure you bring your cleats. The bay should stay locked up for awhile with forcasted temps.Go get em,I left some for seed

I took my little girl out for the first time yesterday. We went of Chestnut for a couple hours(long day for a 4 yr old). I caught five between 9"-12" and a bunch of throwbacks. They were hitting really light, and I was missing them at first. I set the pole down and fished with a hand line. Didn't miss any after that. I was using a shinner-stlye crappie jig with a shinner(they liked it the best??). Wish I could've stayed longer, but I'll try again Wednesday.

I have a question forthose fishing misery and getting a few craps; How big are they?   I fished sat morn and caught 30-40 all in the 7-9" range(not keepers).  I have couple hundred in the 7-9" range this year with only a handful of decent 12 inchers.  Just wondering if you guys are getting the big ones or just keeping the smaller ones?

I wondered exactly what happened . It looked like a collision from a far about 500 yards away . Thanks for the story link . As for the crappies I kept the smaller ones a few weeks ago nothing over 10" . Alot of cutting for small morsels but beer batter made em thick & YUMMY. We thought the air boat was a bit excessive. They could have had him off the ice quicker just dragging him on top of a shanty IMO......

curious exactly WHERE he broke through.  Fished the hell out of a lot of that ice recently...  I'm thinking those things are a lot heavier than they would appear to be, and a ton of torque as they turn on the ice.  Idiots flying past my hut within 20 ft. or so on Saturday while I had my 7 yr old out with me.   I don't wish ill on anyone, but if they lose control or something freak happens (equipment breaks), it's gonna be a bloodbath.  I just don't want it to be ours.  Can't imagine it's possible to regulate them out there as far as the fishermen/"sailor" interactions...  just venting.

This incident happened near the reeds out past the stink hole...right by the point. I talked with one of the fisherman who helped the guy who fell in out as we were walking off the ice. I saw the air boat out there but had no idea what happened until talking to the gentleman coming off the ice. Where the guy broke through the ice, he was able to stand up in the shallow water and the fishermen directed him where to walk and then got a line to him to pull him out.

The ice close to those reeds he said was only about an inch to two inches thick.

The crappies I kept on Saturday, just 12 in all, were between 9-10".  I think maybe one or two was pushing 11".  I tossed back a few between 7"-9".  With that said, I have been out there some years and had the same experience as you.  The ones I caught last weekend were sporadic at best so I'd say I was not on a big school of them.  Or could have been the monster emeralds I was using keeping all the little ones away.

Hello fishermen and women. Went out this morning off Niagara boat launch to 18fow did not mark any fish, seem like nobody fishing there was doing any good, people moving , drilling holes, and heard them say lets go somewhere else and go for some gils. I went to 2nd parking lot and caught a lot of fish, kept 8 keepers enough for a meal tonight and threw back about 20. I lost 3 nice ones under the hole. I too moved around today, drilled about 14 holes. Had the best luck in 12 to 13fow. Heading out to 2nd parking lot tomorrow again.

Up the size of your jig and use 2 waxies. I catch less crappie this way but i get more 11 and 12 inchers. I lost one that had to be atleast 14" at the hole on sunday, tried turning his head into the hole and felt the line go slack. jig popped right out. frostee spoons work great for me. catch some huge gills with this setup too.

Line up with the Channel either off Chestnut or Liberty Park. Perch were hitting emerald shiners. Quite a few small ones but for the most part we were catching keepers. If you can find the edge you will do better. I put a post in lost & found as I lost an ice fihing rod & reel off Liberty & would love to have it back before my wife finds out. It was a Pflueger President on a ice rod.

    Hello fishermen and women,
Ventured out yesterday off 3rd parking lot, early morning got a couple of nice perch on grubs, threw about a dozen back. 14fow. Did a lot of walking and hole drilling yesterday, went towards yacht club, then moved in toward the mainland on yacht club side. Ventured back in towards the head of the bay, back then towards 2nd/3rd parking lot. After all day of fishing and doing that quit around 5:30 ended up with 10 nice keeper perch 9-11" range, 1 large mouth, lost couple of nice perch off the yacht club , threw back about 20-25 fish back. Ice thickness ranged anywhere from 8-12 depending where you were at. Most of the guys I talked to yesterday things were slow for them, on the average they only had 5 fish. One fisherman gave me his 4 to add to my 10, thank you fellow fisherman.
Marked a lot of fish on the vex, the bigger fish are lipping it and hitting real light. the three I lot at the hole u could see they were just holding onto the minnow, one was holding my slit shot. Minnows worked the best at evening hours for me, most of the action came on grubs.
good luck and happy fishing, see ya on the ice

Fished stinkhole for 2 hrs today, 1 keeper perch and 15 or so giant bluegills.

The Lord has blessed us all today... It's just that he has been particularly good to me.
