10" auger

While out fishing a couple weeks ago on Lake Arthur I put my leg up to my thigh through someones old 10" auger hole (and i wear a size 14 boot).  Not only did i get my entire leg and boot soaked it hurt like he!!.  There was a light dusting of snow/ice covering the holes, so you couldnt see them.  About 5 minutes later one of my buddie did the same thing.  Shortly after that a father and young son came out.  After seeing us useing our camera he came running over to check it out however on his way over he found 2 10" holes drilled side by side.  The boy went in both holes and almost the whole way under.  My buddy was able to grab him before he went under only becaue the thin amount of ice between the 2 holes slowed him down.

After seeing this happen everyone that was there was VERY angry with whoever drilled all these holes.  As mad as I am about this a 10" hole is legal however should it be?  What do you think?

I have been ice fishing for many years, and when i started i fished for only bass, muski, and pike.  I used a 7" auger and never had a problem fitting some of the biggest fish through.  I now only pan fish and use a 5" auger.  Last year we got a 10lb steel though a 5in hole.  I'm not saying people should go that small, but i dont see any reason to go any larger than 8".

    That sucks!

I'm not a fan of the 10" holes either. Just overkill IMO.
And 2 holes that close togther is just uncalled for. My 2 year old would go right through a double 10".

I don't think they should be outlawed or anything...lotsa guys would have illegal augers then....but maybe keeping the distance between holes = to, or greater than, their diameter.??
6" holes need 6" between them 10" holes need 10" space between them?? Seems like a good rule of thumb.

Don't know, about all you can do is use caution I guess.

    I agree.
    Those holes are big.
My father-in-law fell through one at Whilhelm by the logs once.
He had his leg and boot frozen by the time we set up the shanty.
    Thank goodness for "buddy heaters".

absolutely no need for 10" holes.  I have an 8" auger that is over-kill.  I'm trying to get my hands on a used 5" or 6" auger.  I agree outlawing 10" augers would be difficult, but then again, how many people really have them?

side note:  don't people know running on ice is dangerous?

I've gone through them, it sucks. They should be illegal or you should not be allowed to have 2 within at least a few feet of each other.

I agree with you and you other posters, I and my wife went thru one years ago and it does hurt. my daughter went through one two weeks ago at horseshoe pond. don't need any bigger than 8, 6-7" if perfect.

I agree with penguins what are you doin with a kid out on the ice if he can fit threw a 10'' hole!!!! Go big or go home! I don't waste my time with them p*ssy pan fish I have had fish that won't fit threw a 8 in hole!! Also if your so worried about gettin wet you shouldn't be on the ice cause you always have a chance of goin threw!!

Wow, you are a couple tough cookies.

Go back & re-read it smart****.

    It was a DOUBLE 10" hole. I'll do the math for you. 10"x10" x 2 = 10" X 20" hole.

I'd be willing to bet I could squeeze you through a 10 x 20 hole.

And as to why I have my kid on the ice....because we enjoy it. I don't follow your logic of not letting a kid come fishing.?? care to elaborate??

Also, FYI them **** panfish are the best eating out there.

    What do you fish for?
What did you catch over 8"
    Just curious.

Nice first post I didn't know you had to agree with anyone person. But your on the money I do have a 10" auger and had it for years (who helped you with that) and I also went up to my knee in a hole, and of I could do it again I would of ordered a 8" auger. People have been drilling 10" holes before me and I didn't think it was problem then or now. So why don't you guys quit crying like little bi*ches and deal with it!!!!!

    I didn't see anyone crying like a ****....
Just some of us pointing out 10" holes are not necessary in this neck of the woods & (2) 10"ers together could be REALLY dangerous for anyone.

You & ICEKAT86 are the ones who seem awfully defensive about the size of your holes. And you're the ones spouting off, I shouldn't have a kid ice fishing. Cause big guys like you like BIG holes and if one of our little kids falls in one, so be it. That kinda talk makes me want to ring you out like a wet rag and see if you'll fit the 10"er.

Actually, I like finding a row of 10"ers pre-drilled I can set my tip-up line on. Saves drilling.
Use 10" holes ALL day for all I care......

But the time my boy falls in your DOUBLE(<----understand the double hole concept??) 10" X 20" hole we got a big problem to sort out.

    Good fishing.

    This is ridiculous. I'm done.

All I was saying was a 10" x 20" hole could get someone killed. I guess I'm wrong.??

I'm sorry, I'm outta line....even though I have yet to see a valid argument from the 10" crowd.

    You guys are absolutely right.

    Good luck this weekend.
Hope you catch an 11" diameter thunderpumper.

I wasnt trying to start a fight and i am sorry if i upset you guys with 10" augers.  Well since i already upset you i might as well upset you a little more.  Lets do some math.

A world record size muski = 61lbs 55.5in long 31.5in girth.  So that means this fish had a 10.026 diameter.  Do you plan on breaking the world record?
    http://www.muskie-fishing.ca/world_record_muskellunge.asp

I know we all like to say we caught a fish that wouldnt fit though a hole, but is that really what happens or is it just what we tell ourselves?  The truth is we catch uncooperative fish that you cant get its head into the hole before the hook pops out.

No 10" holes arent illegal, but i think they should be.  I am 6'2" 250 and wear a size 14 boot.  I went in up to my hip in a single hole and watched a youngster almost drown because he found 2 holes drilled side by side.  8" hole is pleanty big enough for any fish around here.  Or like the guys say above make the distance between 2 holes at least the same size of the hole.

I wonder why you wonder what size his auger is. May be he needs a big hole. argueing about what size hole someone else should use is like telling someone what they should use for bait. Everyone has thier own opinion.Since I use a power auger I use a 8" bit, that lets you use the same hole for a camera & to fish through or even use 2 lines at a time if you want to,also I find that the smaller ones freeze quicker in my opinion. although I agree people should use common sense when drilling too close together. But as you can tell from reading some of the posts on this board common sense can be hard to come by. btw it would be a good idea to make the smaller kids wear a pfd on the ice since you never know when they could go through due to weak spots on the ice.May be the PFC could make that a law.  sam

10" holes are legal in PA. watch where you walk and you should have no problems.

count your lucky stars we are not allowed to spear fish. have you ever seen some of the holes they use for that?

i've jig fished musky in minn. where all the holes are big. used a 9" locally especially w/tip ups. you are correct that most if not all fish can be pulled through a 6" hole but i've pulled 2 musky from canadohta that wouldn't have made it and the bigger hole is definitely a plus. apparently you guys haven't fished late when 2-6"ers become a 16"er. there not illegal so watch and don't go cry to the fish cops that we need more rules.

In Canada they have a very good rule.  If you leave a hole larger than 8" you have to mark it with a stick or whole branch so that as it is freezing it will not be hidden with fresh snow.   And as far as a fish that would not fit throught 8" hole,  60lb. salmon maybe.  Watched a guy land a 48" musky through 8" hole 2 years ago.

    Check this out-
Once I was working on a batch of replica mounts," begins taxidermist Rick Lax, "I was painting them and while looking at the photos I noticed three of them were the exact same fish! She was a spotted musky, 51 inches long with a 24 inch girth, and was missing the top part of her tail. Three separate fishermen had caught and released her up on Eagle Lake that summer and were now getting replicas made. Unbelievable! Had one of these anglers decided to keep her, the other two would have never caught their 'fish-of-a-lifetime'."

    40" King Salmon - male
    24" girth       31 lb.

    just sayin
    8" hole = 25" circumference

Late ice water drained holes are not the type of conditions that were being considered a problem.  Boot sized holes in good ice that refreezes and can be covered with snow was.

nothing like gettn into a mess or crappie  and to have a power auger fire up around u and start drilling and poooof! crappies are goin, or perch or... personally dont see the need for a 8-10" auger... got a 4" lazer and pulled pike, steelhead, perch, slab craps thru with no problems.... and it cuts ice 10 times quicker .... dont really see the need around here for a power auger either... might get 10" + in a good winter but hey to each their own

Just seen on the ny ice page a thread bout hole size, quoting the DEC.It states some like, there is no max hole size, but they suggest nothing a child could fall thru. thought that was intresting.I'm guessing when they suggest something, you should prehaps proceed wwith safety in mind.maybe legal implacations......mmmmmm?Sounds like candana has the smartest rule/idea mark it with a branch or something....not to hard to do..hey 10 inch folks that might go a long way @ meeting the not 10 inch people 1/2 way, just sayin
