CHESTNUT AND PI BAY

Hey fellow fishermen, Alaskan here. I took a ride down to chestnut this morning , there were about a dozen people fishing here, there were 4 huts lined up from shore to middle off Perry's landing marina, could also see huts toward more head of the bay.
The ice off of chestnut was really good, below the snow there is a good black ice that is 7 - 7 1/2 ice, most of the snow is about 1" thick, but there is some spots that the snow is thicker and slushy underneath snow. All in all good ice for fishin'.
The fisherman I talked to said it was their first time out this year, things were slow, they caught a couple of small throw backs. The report is fishing is good off of the public dock but no-one wants to venture over there due to the freighter. Have to check again tomorrow to determine where I am going to drop my lines. I want perch but I just want to catch fish for the kids to have fun, even if it is catching fish that are throw backs! I just want the kids to have fun Saturday.
Good fishin' and hookem and cookem.

We drilled about 2 dozen holes Thursday off Erie Yaught Club & dropped a camera down. Never saw 1 fish over a 3 mile area. Then went over by Liberty Park & drilled 8 holes doing the same thing. I saw 1 perch. There were a few huts out from me. Did not bother to go see how they did as it was sundown & had to leave or get locked in. Ventured off the dock to see if was safe. I was alone so I did not go far but it seemed to be good.

Thanks for the great update captnkirk, excellent post! Fish is spread out, not hearing of any large numbers being caught for perch. Going to keep trying to find them.
    good luck!

Hello fellow fishermen and fisher women, going to check out the edges of the ice this morning to see if the rain had any effect on the edges later this morning, I will give you an update later when I get back in the office. Weather reports show the nights are to stay cold, and temps to start dipping a bit late next week during the day, higher thirty's the next few days. Fish seem to be spread out, need to do alot of moving, take the Vex and stay mobile bouncing from hole to hole. So pack your huts lights and be mobile.,

hammered them last night.  stayed until midnight, and was hitting tons of smedium-sized perch and 1 absolute monster.  I thought it was a freekin walleye when I first saw it come up.  walked off the freezing slush with just under a limit, having thrown back even more than I kept.  overall, a good night.  be prepared for wet conditions late in the day with the warmer daytime temps.  solid 6" under the slush.

Stillhead and I were on the Bay all day yesterday.
The closer to shore, the thinner the ice.  It ranged from 2''-10".  We ended up fishing over 10" of solid, clear ice.
Lots of dinks, a couple of keepers, couple of bluegills and a bucket load of smelt.

Hello fellow fisher men and women, took a ride down to chestnut late this afternoon, there was huts out there fishing, I walked out a bit, the ice is solid but some spots reel slushy. You want to wear a good dry wet boot. I did not go way out to talk to anyone, I was on lunch break.
don't know where to go tomorrow due to ice conditions along shore.

a bunch of us ventured to Chautauqua Lake, 1st stop was nothing but dinks. You had to sort thru the 5-6"ers to get maybe 1 good keeper after tossing 30+ back.

2ns stop yielded 2 sightings on the fish cam, 2 perch and 3 perch between 8 guys in over 2 hours

Dont know how any ice will be after this upcoming weeks temps.

    Hello fishermen & women,

Took a ride down to sommerhimne (the pump station at the head)and there was two trucks but there is a lot of tracks from over the weekend. Quite of few guys were setup and fishing off of 1st parking lot, couple of guys east of the pump station on the same side.
Then I took a ride over to Chestnut street and lot was full of trucks, there more huts out in the middle than I could count. The reports that I was getting that all the fish are all small. The perch that caught on Saturday all were full of eggs,so things should continue to be could when the turn on.
    see ya on the ice

My buddys and I went out at 2pm & fished straight off the dock yesterday afternoon. Caught many small ones. Only 1 out of the 5 caught any keepers. We were nomadic and moving out towards the buoy as there were a few guys out there already.
Ice was decent and thicker in most areas. There were quite a few huts off Chestnut.

Good morning fishermen and women, mother nature is answering our call it is cold and a little light snow to prov it to us! Ice conditions are excellent, shore is holding up well, the bay is holding between 6 1/2 -7 1/2", saw a 4 wheeler out off of chestnut yesterday. Now we just need the fish to turn on so we get can report large fish in large numbers. One thing is nice those small fish will be big fish someday, it is nice to see the management of the perch program is paying off, large numbers in the bay guys are saying they see with their underwater cameras. Excellent catches in the lake during the summer months, guys limiting out practiclally every outing on the boats. Steel head programs has done really well, now it would be nice to see the walleye numbers back up again like it was in the late 80's early 90's. They do well over Ohio, but for some reason they don't school this way like they used too, BUT excellent perch fishing!!
With temps finally starting to dip, our hard water fun should continue for awhile! Boo global warming, Yeah to cold Arctic air!!!

I've done "ok" off Chestnut so far...  2 good trips, 1 not so.  I keep seeing tons of people off the 1st and 2nd lots on PI, but when I go to fish it, nobody's catching anything.  I haven't had a single bite there in the 2 times I've stopped.  I even hit the stinkhole this past Saturday, with only pinky-sized perch biting.  Misery continues to be the most productive spot, and that seems to be diminishing.  Might be time to move inland.

Has anyone done well in Marina Bay?  Last yr it was a total dud, so I haven't even attempted it so far.  I've done well there in years past, but last season was really unproductive in at least 8 attempts.  I want to convince my brother to take his new camera in there to play with some steel, and work on some gills too.

Please p.m. if you don't want to post publicly.

Hello fishermen & women, Alaskan here. Well check the ice yesterday as you know and it was looking good. Well this afternoon my kids and I went out about 1pm and the ice is even better! It got cold last night and today it was in the lower 30's and with the wind chill it was 23deg. the slush is almost completely frozen, some spots you walk may sink an inch but underneath it is the consistancy of an icee. Quite a few fishermen were out today everyone I talked too were the same situation me and the kids had today was all little ones. all the ones we caught were 7" but we didn't want to keep them, caught a bunch that were 4" to just under 7". Only 1 that was 9-10". everyone said same thing, small ones. Fishermen with cameras say the fish are there just looking at bait and turning away. But ice is good. We have to be patient with these fish, they will turn on again. Warm days cold nights this Sat, Sun, and Monday. Lets go cold!!!! Hale to long hard water!!!!!

All I can say is if the pack isn't catching anything, why on earth would you stay in it????

Iron Maiden was the ticket today.  Good ice, just make sure you have your cleats or add some sheet metal screws to your boots.(like I do)  Those rubber thingys don't work unless you have child-size boots.  I keep a pair handy for the kid, but won't try to stretch them on my boots, especially when cold.  Saw a dude with a modified roto-tiller he used to tow himself and his gear on and off the ice.  Pretty slick.  Looked like a podracer.

Fished off Dobbins on Sunday Morning. Was the first one on the ice. The first 30 yards were very slippery ice then hit about 40 yards of slush. That was spooky going through 4-5" of slush. Went out about 200 yards total. Set up with grubbs, mousie grubbs, wax worms, & emerald shiners. Started hitting perch right off the bat on minnows. Stayed untill the propane tank was empty about 11:00am. Took 9 perch home that were over 9" and released 22 that were under 9". Pretty much non stop action on the minnows & hardly a bite on anyting else. Fished in 22 FOW. The SONS just put a video camera on top of the tower on Dobbins that shows the whole bay and how many anglers are out there.

I think they just want to catch something to have some fun. From what other fishermen are saying that have cameras is that fish are there, big fish that is but there is a lot of bait fish, smelt and shad, so no wonder the bigger fish don't want to hit.

    Hello fellow fishermen and women,
took a ride and checked around today, ice is good everywhere but fishing is slow, parking lots 1-3 nothing, yacht club slow, chestnut small ones. I didn't check dobbins today. I talked to a couple of guys who fished Mis and they said they got a couple of gils. Things seem to be slow everywhere head of the bay, nothing. I think may have to start checking inland lakes or even maybe Chaut. lake. for crappies and walleyes.
