Chautauqua Ice?

Hey all I'm from Pittsburgh PA and just got an opportunity today to go to Chautauqua next week with some friends and have never fished it through the ice.  I just started Ice fishing last year and the only time I fished this lake was in the summer for bass.  Any advice for through the ice (don't care what species)? any special regulations in NY or on this lake?  Thank you much for any info!

Depends on what your target fish will be. Its a big body of water so there are many different areas to fish. walleye ? perch? crappie/panfish ? bring a shovel ice is just starting to really tighten up now

ice everywhere is sketchy, really all the fishing is in Bertis lately with a few in Pendergrass area. Problem is there is a minute amount of ice/black ice (good ice) with a ton of slush above it and then snow on top of that which acts like an insulator so its not locking up as well. 2 buddys & I went for a ride around the whole lake checking things out.
Best bet is to go into the NY section on iceshanty.com & look up chautauqua lake thread

Fished Mayville 1st thing this morning. It was loaded with perch but there were all that 5-6" range. Maybe had 1 keeper to every 30 throw back. Ice was maybe 2" at most thick, lil scary, and had 6-7" crappy slush. Buddy went out about 45yds to see if deeper would have bigger fish and boot went thru the slush & ice. Luckily he had his balance to back up & out and come back in. The 8 foot we were in was very weedy.

PAcked up and went to Long Point. Talked to 4 guys coming off at 1030, they were disgusted & seen nor caught anything, so they said. So the 8 of us still ventured out. I saw 2 dinks, other buddy & kid and no hits, and other buddy and kids nothing, but they did see 3 perch do mach 10 past there camera.

Can't see how the ice will hold up seeing how these temps are to be all this week coming up.

I'm really surprised the ice isn't better on Chautauqua.  We've got about 8" on Presque Isle.  I wanted to try the meadows for walleye.  Might be best to wait a while yet.

snow acts as an insulator so that is why there ice is crap & slush.

What it needs is like a good flushing, melt over and start anew.
