Sharpening auger blades?

Has anyone tried sharpening auger blades? I tried once long time ago with poor results.. heard from others as well it is very difficult to get that factory edge. I recently ordered fron fish usa a lazer sharpener and backup set of lazer 5" blades. So far, my original blades are still cutting well enough, they feel razor sharp but think i can use a slight touch=up.. hoping this sharpening tool does the trick.. has anyone used an auger sharpening tool with good results? .. I ordered a replacement set of auger blades too for backup.

haha, I remember trying to take extra care using a fine rectangular size 2"sharpening stone but thought it was the angle of the dangle I needed.. guess I will try the lazer tool sharpener with extra caution..will wait till i'm out on the ice to try doing it. Glad I bought the second blades in anycase. Tuna, my hand auger works but I notice when boring a hole it tends to bore a hole slightly to an angle, still drills fast enough but is this a sign of wearing blades?

There is also that blade exchage at Fish307.  I think I am going to do that, especially if I can just drop off my old ones and get resharpened ones on the spot.  TEN BUCKS, man!  Thats hard to beat, and they are guaranteed.

Yeah, I thought doing that but the strikemaster site wants 20.95 for exchange plus shipping! Besides, I wanted a second set knowing the experience I had once on an older hand auger when the an allen screw snapped on one of the blades yanking the auger up. Happened only once but that was enough to warrant another set for backup.

I think Fish USA does any blades under 8" for ten bucks...  From Jersey there is like a $5 shipping fee.

I am hoping to dodge that all together by just walking into the store in person!

i have a local lawnmower shop sharpen mine because you only grind on the one edge like a lawnmower blade.  ive noticed most peoples problem is that they sharpen both sides of the blade as i did the first time.i touch mine up every day on the ice using a stone.  i also fish with a hand auger so sharp blades are a must.

if at first you dont succeed... blow it up.

    Jimmy:

You are right about Fish 307.  Exchanged mine last year and the new blades were great for a reasonable fee.  However, if you go in person make sure you shave first so they do not think you are Santa Claus!  Jeff and the others are really nice guys!

You can try to send them to bud hull at iceaugers.com. He will sharpen any set of blades and return them for around $10. He's been sharpening mine ever since I used a spoon auger 30 years ago. I've not yet sent him any lazer blades but if he can do an old spoon auger he can do any.

    He also guarantees his work.

When I had an old Mora, I used to sharpen the blades by marking the edge with a permanent marker, and then gently working the edge, until all the marker wore off. Worked great till I unknowingly drilled over a rock on Paradox Lake and competely F'ed the auger to the point of uselessness.
