fox pelt

Anyone know the best way to get a smell out of a tanned fox pelt? Dad got one from a guy at work who traps and tried one of those "do it yourself" tanning kits from Cabela's. Now that he's finished with it, there is a slight oder coming from it. (It not a decay smell, more like a chemical smell). Anyone have any idea how to remove it with out ruining the tanned hide?

thats should be the smell from the tanning solution if it was done rite. i do some trapping and i tan most of my hides. learned from a good taxidermist. i have fox, minks, deer and beaver hides that i have tanned. is the pelt stiff?? has it been stretched??

if it has been tanned correctly you can wash it in the washing machine using DAWN dish liquid. if it was tanned rite, once it is tanned it will always be tanned. wash it with the dawn and dawn only. (others will make the hair slip) then put it hide out on a stretcher for it to dry. stretching the hide will make it more limber. after its dry after a couple weeks you can use sand paper on the hide to thin it. this will make it even softer but dont go to thin you will go all the way through. after dried and stretched you can flip the hide. reach in side up to its nose and pull it to flip it fur side out. its pretty easy. good luck.

thanks for the info. I believe the smell IS from the tanning solution. I'll pass these on to my Father.
