alrighty, well its first ice time.

I'm getting itchy to get out, and am ready to start planning now.

I am in .... with 5 straight days of below freezing temps we should have a few options by Saturday ...  perhaps a big Onderdonk blowout?.... it's a great spot for a big party  and lots of pickerels to keep us busy.

Anyone ever keep pickerel for fish cakes?

SOF - Onderdonk was completely locked up Sunday, looked good too. Surprised nobody had ventured out there.

really??.....i am little surprised at that ... just make sure you stay away from the right side shoreline as you leave the parking area

Lance - there are perch in there....caught a few jigging and a few on tipups...size is ok but not whoppers

it's a great spot for a party ... easy parkin, not much of a walk and lots and lots of flags to chase

plus there wont be any snowmobiles yet!

but if some other place makes more sense i am easy

Guys any idea if these 2 days of 40 and rain will hurt what ice we already have ?

After the sun sets today it's back to 20's for highs & teens at night.

According to "Uncle Weatherby" the ice will be iffy South so be careful!  I will be thinking further North to Butternut Pond off Exit 33 of the Northway.  Decent perch and pike, but I will fish it during the week to avoid the crowds

OL' BUTTERNUT!!! How do you access the ice? Crawl through the big culvert? My family camp is just up rte 9 on the other side of Pok-o-Moonshine from there. My dad and I used to put our canoe on there when I was a kid, and we would get some decent pike usually. Theres actually one heck of a population of crappies in there too. Better question, do you know of any way to access auger lake? There are some really nice crappies and even some eyes in there!

I am hoping to fish this weekend, as long as I find some safe ice.  I have new Marcum that I am dying to put to use.

Just be COOL out there, right now I know things are buzzing of ice as they should be.. All I want to say is lets keep the buzz goin from the top side.
The north country is a good bet for places above 800' with FRIGGID weather on the way.. You Southern guys take care out there and we all should a have great report next weekend...

well i was thinking of trying a friends pond this week.  i stocked it with largemouths last year and its got thousands of rock bass and pumpinseeds.  it also has the ever elusive kebafish!  thats a cross between a largemouth and a pumpkinseed that the dec told me is physically impossible.  i usually dont go out till theres about 6 inches or so.  im a big boy and need a bit more ice.

if at first you dont succeed... blow it up.

you want organic? well then shut the &^$() up and eat a *$&#*( squirrel.

with any luch, me and blitz will head up north a bit and give the pike an early season whoopin. given that the lake was thinly iced this weekend and as of wednesday that area will be well below freezing everyday and night i'm pretty confident of the ice. 2" of good ice is fine with me, pack light, tread lightly, and test every 10 feet. Good luck to all who head out and be safe!

i usually wear one of those co2 inflatable life vests when i go out too. lightweight and when worn under a coat can still inflate without an issue.  one of my friends pulled the cord on me last year while i was pulling a laker off my tipup though.  would have been my first one except i broke the line when i jumped and squealed like a girl from being scared.  i think 2 inches is a bit light for me still though weighing around 260 at the moment.  last year i was 320 so should be a little safer.

Well unless I get an invite on some safe ice I plan on doing some scouting champlain direction. Gonna check out some old spots from when I was a kid. Have an invite for a trip for rainbows but that means I have to dust off the tipups. lol
