Esopus or near by streams

As a few of you may know I am an avid fly fisherman. These past two months I have spent some time deer hunting near the Ashokan Reservoir area. I noticed some good waters and was wondering if anyone can give me some info? I think next year I may take a road trip but probably will only come down once or twice and want to get a feel for when may be the best time. Any info is appreciated.

Thanks.

You might be best using egg patterns in early spring if flyfishing.. i tried copperjohns and beadhead pheasanttails in tandem.. i'm not well rehearsed for early Esopus nymphing..good time is when the river has a good flow, spring time can prove difficult if it is high and muddy.. try the upper on the opening week.. get skunked, try you second trip after they stock the stream. Ashokan you need apply nyc watershed permit

Will I find just browns in these waters? I have the NYC DEP permit. What level of flow would you consider good if I was looking at a stream gauge?

Both A and E are stocked with state hatchery browns anually. The rainbows are natives and sadly on the decline imo. you can visit this site and check streamflow charts or table for daily cfs flows on nov 29,30 it was just around 500cfs easy wading imo.on the low anything above 1000 cfs is high. check table and you get hourly cfs stats here's the site http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ny/nwis/uv?cb_00060=on&cb_00065=on&format=gif_stats&period=7&site_no=01362500

Backin Thanks for the info. The last time I was down was a couple weeks ago for deer hunting and there was a bridge at the upper end of the Ashokan were the river went underneath. Is there public parking there?
