Gun Safety Question

Let me preface this by saying that on the rare occassions that I do hunt out a tree stand, I ALWAYS unload the gun climbing in or out.

But I read the story again this year of a gun discharging when it was dropped.  A guy and his young daughter were hit, fortunately neither seems to be life-threatening.

Anyway, this might seem like a dumb question, but I honestly don't know.  If you drop a gun from a treestand WITH THE SAFETY ON can it still discharge due to the impact somehow?

Was the safety on in the incident you are referring to?

Dunno Danes. I've always assumed that the stories I've read of guns firing when dropped were the result of the safety being off and the trigger hits something. But I was wondering if a hard impact on a gun with the safety on could make it fire.

Either way, how freaky is it that the gun dropped, went off, and managed to hit not one but both of them? That was a one in a million chance.

From my understanding is that if the gun hits the ground butt end first hard enough the firing pin can engaged due to the force even if the safety is on.  That is why if you drop your gun you should avoid your first instinct to look down to see where it lands.  That could be the last thing you ever see.

That makes sense rpg. That's kind of what I was thinking. Something hard enough to cause the firing pin to engage the primer.

    Good advice too.

There is a chance of the safety disengaging during the fall, if it glances off something, or as it hits the ground. On my model 700 the saftey is on top of the reciever, as opposed to a crossbolt safety in front of the trigger.

I never raise nor lower my rifle with a shell in the breech - simple safety!

Also, I put a loop in the end of my rope, wrap it around my sling - then put loop over barrel to raise or lower! This provides quick release in the event of a shot being presented!

I might be wrong, but I believe the gun dropped while the two hunters were already in the stand. I believe that's how it went. They weren't raising or lowering it. As I said, I could be mistaken. In any event, no shell in the breech while raising and lowering is good advice.

not sure about the father daughter accident ...  but in my case,  I was already in the stand for an hour or so and when I turn to get the video camera the shotgun slipped off my lap...

had nothing to do with raising or lowering a load gun which I agree is STUPID...

I have heard that if you have had your triggered worked to be lighter, the trigger mechanism can slip when it has taken a hard blow, therefore the gun would go off...Never witnessed it as I have never dropped my gun...

16506, built a shooting backstop out of railroad ties, 4x4s and cement. It sits 100 yds off my deck. Neighbor came over with son and grandson to site in a few years back. Set 'em up on card table and gun rests. I was in the house when I heard the oddest gunshot. Went out to see the cover of the table blown to s#*t. Seems like a .243 doesn't shoot well out of a .308. Needless to say, they bought me a new table. Saved the old one for people that want to site in, the story that goes along with it makes everyone pay closer attention.

I have been told that some can discharge with a concusion. That was one of the selling points of the Winchester Mod#70 safety and triger systems.
