ice cleats

I'm new to the sport of ice fishing so bear with my simple questions. I need a pair of cleats. I'm partial to simple and less expensive. Something that will just slip over my boots. Can any of you guys give me some tips of what to try and what to maybe stay away from?

Yak Tracks are fairly priced and work well , i have a pair of those real cheapo Wal-mart rubber ones with just a few rows of metal spikes ... work ok for me, but the spikes are only in the front ball section of your foot, so if don't get on your heals LOL

We also recommend you try Stabilicers ice cleats. For under $20.00 you can get a pair of the Stabilicer Lites which also have cleats but won't rust and are highly durable and will probably last you twice as long. From all reports they have great traction and are a great investment.

Happy fishing & stay safe (and warm!)

There is a "Plus" model or something like that which costs a little more but has a better strap / attachment mechanism so it stays on better..... i have been very happy with mine and the hiking forum people all say the better design will last longer and work better.

I can be on glare ice and have no troubles even over my big rubber boots......or i could always break out the 10 point crampons ...

I went all season without any creepers last winter and swore I wouldn't do it again.  Even though we had snow cover most of the winter, there were a few outings that were pretty treacherous!!!

I recall a late-season on Collins that was like a skating rink...  And I wiped out on Paradox one afternoon so badly I thought for a few minutes I might be dead.  Man, you sure can fall down quick out there.  Hurts too.

So last week I ordered these mutha's off eBay since they look like they are made to fit on my Mickey Moose boots from the military.  I am skeptical of the cleats lacking heel studs, since I need all the spikes I can get.

But at least I can drill holes with my hang auger on bare ice and not spin myself around the hole all morning.

These looked pretty burly, but I won't be able to give ya' a report until at least January!!!

I wanted to make sure I was better armed than the pike we're chasing, Brian...

Hopefully the light cleats will offset the 50lb boots I will be lugging around all winter.  I got a lot of winter gear this summer from Craigslist and EBay.  Military surplus might be the way to go for cold-weather stuff, I think.

I don't need "high-performance", just "absurdly warm" for my style of winter fishing.

Also, I need a lot of pockets

Jimmy:  I think if you spin around on the ice on those you won't need an auger.

I have tried the just about every gizmo gadget you can put on your feet! My son got me a pair of Spiky Ice Cleats and they are honestly the best ones out there www.spiky.com. I have had mine going on 3 seasons now, still in perfect shape.

My first were those little snap on ones still have but lost them in the garage, never use them anymore..they were not stable and i always needed to use caution on black ice..tried alot since.. the rubber stretch ones worked better here but i like the stableicers with the velcro and vibram..the whole sole studded as you can see so there is less risk of slipping..the others in the package was my little nieces xmas gift some years ago.[image][/image]

Spiky Ice cleats all the way. My buddies and I all have them. You can't even tell your wearing them but they really grip the ice. In really heavey snow they really aren't that great but on ice they are hands down the best on the market. They are the original ice cleats, my dad used to wear them. AND GUESS WHAT THEY AREN'T MADE IN CHINA.

Yeah, I my son uses the Spiky Ice Cleats with the cleats in the back. You can run circles on an ice skating rink in those things. They last forever too.
