The Three Amigos Spend a Weekend In "Brown Town"

Well, the weekend finally arrived and DeadFish and I hit the highway on Friday evening and made a leisurely way weswart to meet Hot Tuna along the Salmon River since he'd already been out there a few days and sure had some good reports.  He taunted me with a cell photo of a 14lb brown and we got there as fast as we could.

We arrived in town a little on the late side, and after rigging up the gear around 1am it was hard to really sleep.

We wanted a wicked early start to stake a claim on some prime water.  Sitting around we were all anxiouus rigging flies and waiting for "castable light" to start the day.  Anticipation was rampant:

I really wanted a brown.  Nothing against a chromer, but I had visions of giant kype-jaws in my mind all night Friday.  As I write this now, it's Sunday night- and on the late side.  Let' s just say this.  We caught a buttload of Browns.  Tuna and Red have tons of great photos- we caught COUNTLESS fish.

Real bruisers.  I will gice you a taste in pics for now until I can get some posted tomorrow.

It was a bit of a flyfishing BLOODBATH for fish between 4 and 10+lbs all weekend.

At many points pretty much contant.

No metalheads.  Only a tiny percentage of the hookups were Chrome.  Tons were butter-colored.

We Even "Doubled Up" and had a double release shot.  Sweet.

Here are  more shots before I go to bed.  I bet by tomorrow evening the three of us can get some of the better shots up here.  We took some sweet photos and sure had a hell of a good time.  Kudos and thanks to Hot Tuna for being such and insanely competant and kickass guide.  And for being funs hell too.

Red also put on a virtual clinic on the finer points of indicator fishing with a light leader for big trout.

"Hooked Up" wicked early in the moring on Day One.  Zero sleep.  Full excitement-mode though.

We parked ourselves right in the center of "Brown Town" for most of the weekend.  Amazing.

We put in two very, very solid days on theh big river.  Had an absolute riot.  What a great bunch of dudes.

I can't wait to see all the pictures from the other guys.  Mine were on my camera.  We took a lot of photos and caught a ton of fish.  I bet there are some GEMs for the fish porn lovers out there.  Post em UP!!!

We were the first cars in the parking lot on Saturday morning before dark.

Then the last to leave on Sunday night.  What an amazing weekend of World-Class brown trout fly fishing.

Good job you guys...looks like an awesome time. I am heading up there myself in about 20 minutes. It's typical that I'll be steelheading and you guys say its full of browns.  I'm sure I'll be in the wrong place at the wrong time but what the hell- I'm used to that at the SR.  WTF - Browntown?  I'm hoping that's in Altmar someplace. Maybe this will be my lucky day, I'm even bringing a net.

Beer - it's whats for breakfast

Dude, I totally pulled an all-nighter on Friday...  By the time we were all settled into the cabin it was after 1am and we'd already cracked some beers.  So while the other guys 'slept' for three hours, I laid in bed and planned my attack on the browns...

The kype-jaws I saw in my head were not even as badass as the ones I saw in person on Saturday morning!

So when the alarm went off, it was time to get the beer out again.

By the end of the first day, it was all pretty blurry.

We had a helluva' good time.

Yeah, it was a heck of a trip!

First, thanks to RJ, who showed what a consumate professional guide he is. He put us on fish, and kept us on them all weekend. He answered every question I had about water conditions or places to cross or holding lies. He actually did the least fishing of the three of us, content with netting our fish.

Jimmy was kind enough to drive us out there, thanks to him for that and covering gas. I was reflecting on the weekend this morning, and I was amazed, I've only met these guys a handfull of times, and I felt like I was an "old friend" the entire weekend.

Thanks RJ and Jimmy! Two great guys and what an epic trip!!!

Now on to the fish porn!

Oh man where to start ?? Great friends fishin' to me the catching was just seeing your **** azz smiles from ear to ear all weekend. Had a blast for sure.
You guys pretty much hit all the fish Porn since sat.... EXCEPT for the big hog.... I'll get a few of my pic's up tonight and add more. For sure we will meet up this week and exchange all the pic's.

Thursday I was sending NJ text about the 2 browns & steelhead I lost. Later in the day everything was set and in the money.
Friday morning a cool 22 degs and nobody at dsr by 6am.
Sun comes up all nice & by 8:30 I send jimmy a crappy photo of the first silver rocket.

12:00 text him 3 chromers landed then things shut down searching for more.
2pm send another crappy photo,"when you getting here"
that turned out to be quite late but all well...
when they walked in to the cabin I hit them with these photos and watched their jaws drop..

there was one other person fishing and took these few photos for me.

    many more to come

Tuna- that second photo there in this latest batch might be my favorite of the bunch so far!

What a sweet shot.  I am glad we took a few seconds to take good photos.  That weekend was worthy of documentation!  Red's net was a huge asset too- kept the fish so fresh!  All the releases were so quick!

Only that first fish of mine needed much reviving (since I babied him pretty good!)

All those pics are sweet.  But that second one from water level of your brown is sick.  Did I take that?

So I never fly fished the SR, most trips in recent years were alway on the sub zero side and so never bothered with the thought of stripping wet line. Few seasons back , i bought under a hundred bucks a 9.6 okuma im8 spin rod at fat nancies coming in off the exit. Now I do have a three pc powell 8wt. i hardly ever used!!! bringing it next trip got a box of assorted steelhead wets ..enough egg patterns etc.. Is the douglas the place to stay this time of year or is it best to station lodging upstream nearer the fly section? where is the best place to take a dump in the morning after an extra large dunkin donuts? Did the DEC put portajons in the parking lots yet? i'm bringing an empty 5 gallon bucket with a lid of coarse and roll of scottie,, who's with me? BARRY! LETS DO IT!LOL

Rumor has it that it may have gone as much as 17lbs, depending on shoulder thickness.  Jeeeeeeeezus!

DeadFishRed took some measurements of one of the earlier fish in the day.  I think it was something like 26 or 27 inches long with a 17-inch girth...  17 inch GIRTH!!!  That turned out to be one of the 'smaller' fish all weekend.

Good Lawd.  I want to quit my job and just cast tiny flies to big browns fulltime for a week or two...

Jimmy, just ran the numbers on the 27x17, it was just under 10lbs, like 9lbs 13oz...we should have def. measured most of them, no doubt we had quite a few that cleared 10lbs...

Good Lawd. I want to quit my job and just cast tiny flies to big browns fulltime for a week or two...

yeah, its depressing once the realization sets in that its only going to happen a few days a year.

Wow man...  I would have to realistically think that at least 80% of the fish landed may have been double-digits!

I think I better request a 'leave of absence' for the entire Veterans Day week of 2010.  See you there, Tuna!!!
