Game On

sounds like we have a Ice 09>10 challenge here.
Tippers VS Jiggers ..
I'm up for it .. What do you think ???
My thoughts:
2 trips :
1. Jiggers choice of lake
2. Tip-ups choice of lake

Jig guys can only use rods and tip-up guys only well tip-ups
don't matter what you fish for.

That would be fun...  And wicked easy to get everyone on a lake doing their thing...  A group weekend day on Lake George or Otsego, I would assume (you jigheads are so predictable) and then a weekend outing somewhere else...  Probably somewhere weedy, with good sunlight and a pleasant view (us bait guys are so predictable).

Me and my bucket-full-of-fun-flags would love to attend.  Showdowns are always a treat.

I can keep an eye on basecamp and ensure that the ice cubes in my drink don't get dry.

FLAG!!!    See you jiggers at lunchtime.  We'll start the grill around 11:30am...

Beer's in the shanty so it won't freeze up.

    Oh its F_ING ON!!!!!!!!!

Lake George would be a perfect lake 'cause there is always the panfish jigging and pike on tip ups shallow, and then the trout out deep.

Red I think you are an AWESOME addition to the "club house" . The right stuff and willing to put up with our antics. Ice 09>10 will be great and I'm really looking forward to your get'er done approach. I hope to never stop learning and may show me the light to something new..
Jimmy hit it right on with the challenge, I knew what us tipper guys would be against and where. Only thing our lakes will (should) be ready by Dec. jiggin lakes hopefully Feb. I'm ready to put my foot where my mouth is and or stick it up my azz and be humbled.
You must realize as NJ said those tippers will be on a shallow weedy lake and we wont be targeting pannies. But it will be cool and plenty of smokestack lightning from the shanty. Anytime you get tired feel free to come in and rest a spell...

thoughts... just so everyone has a good time, jiggers can set up traps & Tippers can line up the jiggers for Sambuca & Jagermeisters.
Really, don't care what everyone does but only their preferred method counts fish. I have 3 lakes in mind for us trap guys. We'll talk about it and make a group plan...

Hell yeah!  I like to set up tip-ups, but I like to jig also.  I mean once your tip-ups are in, it's kind of boring to just look at them. I try to jig some pannies while I strafe the pike neighborhoods in lakes like Round or Saratoga or Lonely.  I've only been to Lake George once for lakers and it was fruitless.  Fishing that deep is kind of foreign to me. Hopefully I'll gain some knowledge on that from you guys.  I would be in for whatever type ya got.

Why do we need games - We are adults that enjoy the outdoors and ice fishing.  What ever happened to a good old fashion fun day on the ice with other friends and ice fishing buddies???

Perhaps the "freinds don't let freinds use tip ups" thing set off a few pike hunters, ha!

It's obviously a case of preference of species or energy one wishes to expend.  But I agree Ed, it's really just about friends hanging out on the same peice of ice, doin' their own thing.

#1 priority is ALL about having fun with a good group of buddies. The "game" thing is actually more of a fun thing, not a serious matter.

Well, well, well...  Check out the looks of the front yard while I was leaving for work this morning!

I guess if you whine and moan enough, hardwater will form overnight for you.

Woo Hoo!  I thought we were far "behind" on ice this season compared to last, but now it appears we are actually AHEAD of the game!  At least at my house!  Skim ice before New Years, Baby!!!

(But check out the steam, obviously the lake is still a lot warmer than the air!)

Also, on a totally unrealted note.  Any of you guys with wooden tip-ups might want to consider a little woodstain on them.  What a difference!  The Minwax will stain and seal, so it's just GOTTA' be good for wood that is spending 8+hrs underwater a few days each week.  Plus, they look awesome.

This photo doesn't do it justice, really.  The trap on the left is untouched.  The one on the right is stained.

If I ever wear out these Heritage Lakers, I am going to stain them even deeper colors next time.  I chose a middle darkness (Cherry) but I think darker shades like Walnut or Mahogony may yeild even better results!

I'm in for any type of ice action.  I've never been before, but with that said I have a feeling that the tip up thing would be more appealing to me.  However, one never knows until they try right?

Anyway, I need to get some equipment.  Are there any suggestions?  I have nothing at the moment and want to do both types.  Any input is appreciated.

ice fishing can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be.
If you go with others (esp. w/gas auger ) then an auger really is not necessary but at some point you will want your own. Those blue mora augers are the least expensive @ like $40.00 and honestly (with sharp blades) work fine in less the 2' of ice. Size all depends on species, smaller cuts easier but an all around size would be 6" hole. If you are looking to fish northern thick ice for sure you want a better auger such as a nils or gas auger.. Be ready for sticker shock !

Next you'll NEED Tip-ups : with traps(tip-ups) you really get what you pay for. That said, if you are fishing small local places those cheap ones around $9.00 work fine, heck I still use my grandfathers very old woden ones on small water. If you plan on fishing deep or northern waters for pike or lakers you'll need better traps with a tension (big bait pulls line and trips flags)
Also look for ones that are tall enough so you (and snowmobiles) can see and hold at least 200' of line.

Jig rod: They are basic & cheap , shorter light ones for pannies , longer (30") heavier for lakers.. Basic ..

gotta have a bucket for bait, simple pail and a bubbler works.

The rest is up to your imagination & deep pockets.

But best advice go out with someone who can lend you gear and see how you like it...

LOL thats funny Jimmy ... it happened overnight just like that !!

    Nice to see

Once locked up i can't believe how quick the ice is forming. I checked a spot last Sunday (2" of clear) .... today there was 5" of clear solid.
WOW !! In just 5 days time.
