Bow

I finally got my Ross CR334 today....well, got it home, that is.  I dont know how often any of you buy new bows and it seems like the industry is always pushing archers to get the latest and greatest every year.  I myself, hadn't got a new one in like 15 years.  The difference is unbelievable.  I'd highly recommend to anyone who has had their rig for ten years or more-check out the new ones.  You'll be amazed.

And to those of you who get a new one every year-more power to you.  Dont tell anyone where your money tree is growing.

Cool Dane.  The flyfishing industry is the same way.  I too, don't buy into it.  I just wait for a rod company to come out with a new rod then buy the older version.    I shot Mathews new bow before I bought mine, I didn't care for it.  I like to get about 8-10 years out of a bow.  Now go break that new bow in!!   I'm shooting the fiirst 5 point or button buck I see!!!!

I remember when 300fps was UNBELIEVEABLE. Now I saw PSE saying something like 360. All the bow manufacturers are above 300 anymore. I KNOW what bow I want. Ill wait 2-3 more years till someone that owns it needs a bow that shoots 500fps then Ill buy it for half the price.

Now you gotta shoot something to justify the purchase.

Can't believe how fast this industry changes. Most every thing I learned about setting up bows and the equipment used was learned working in an archery shop for a couple years. Which was 6 years ago. We had to spend countless hours tweaking our 3D bows to get to 300fps. 360fps is almost unheard of.

I was in Gander Mountain today and they had a cross bow there that did 406 fps. and it only(gulp) cost $1600 without extras. Don't remember the name but it looked impressive. I shot one today that did 275fps and that seemed pretty quick. It went for $700. I'm looking to buy one somewhere along the lower figure mentioned but need to see, feel, shoot and analize information about them. Will be my first Xbow and I don't want to make a $600 to $800 mistake.

It seems like in archery, the manufacturers want you to buy new every year, but often the technology changes very little year to year.  But wait 6 -8 years and the technology really changes.  Then it is worth it.  As far as speed goes, I feel I'd rather hit slow than miss fast.

My bow is like that.  The CR334 is not this years model (The Cardiac is the new now), but it is still light years ahead of my old bow.

I've been shooting a little Mathews FX for 5 years now. Not all the Mathews bows are overly priced. I got mine for under $400. Although I already had a rest, site and most accessories. Looked at some new bows the other day when I bought a new string and harness. Almost $800 for the new upper end models..Tooo much for me..

Anybody actually have their bows chronographed before.  Just curious too see how your results compare to mine.  First my bow is Hoyt Razortec  29.5" draw, 67#, drop away rest, I shoot gold tip carbon arrows.  IBO rating on that bow is I believe to be around 315.  However, last year I had it measured the best I could get was about 265fps,  I did it the year before with alum. arrows and it was more like 230. Not quite sure where the IBO speeds they list come from.  I just cant possibly see where 50fps could come from on my bow, not that im worried about it.  So BEWARE of the evil IBO ratings, and remember pick a new bow on comfort NOT speed.

IBO speed is measure with a 30" draw, a 350 grain arrow, at 70lbs of draw weight.

There are very few hunting setups that can shoot over 300fps. One reason being arrow weight. I shoot gold tips cut off to 27 3/4 inches with blazer veins and 100gr field points. The total arrow weight is 396 grains +/- a few grains. So already, without considering any other variables, my hunting arrows are slowing my arrowspeed below IBO speed.

Something else to consider, is what you have attached to your string. IBO speed is measured with no more than a nock on your string. When you add a D-loop, string leeches, a kisser button, and a peep sight, etc... you are adding weight to your bowstring, which slows your arrowspeed.

My bowtech is rated at 315fps IBO, but with my current setup, is shooting around 270 fps.

Does anyones hunting rig shoot at it's stated IBO?  I doubt it, unless you draw over 30 inches, have a draw weight over 70 pounds and use the lightest arrows possible.

One thing when you try and tweak them to the max it makes the bows terribly noisy. I pull 70# at a 291/2" draw and never approach the ibo speed on a hunting rig..

I don't think I've ever got mine tested.  I think its IBO is like 315 or something.  Honestly, I could care less.  It's fast enough and it super quiet and forgiving.  All that matters to me.

Never checked, I bet its under 250 though. I only shoot 54lbs of draw weight.

I think the most important thing overlooked is brace height, I really dont think a lot of people even understand the term. Let alone how it works.
