hey, new to this forum, but really enjoy catching carp, particularly large ones. I have also spent time bow-fishing for them, & enjoyed that as well. I c&R rod-n-reel, but havesting with a bow whether they are tossed in the woods for the coons to eat or taken home to fertilize gardens, has no effect on the population. I have lived in WNY (where I started fishing for carp)& CO, where I still occasionally fish for`em, & has really started to become a targeted fish(fly-rodders-"rocky mountain bonefish"). The latest I`ve ever managed to catch carp has been towards late Oct.- how do you target these fish through the winter? Here`s an additional curve-ball-it is illegal to chum in CO.-so how would I go about catching more than plentiful 20 lb. fish that you don`t have to pay any more than your fishing liscence to catch, but you can`t chum for during winter? Just looking for some fishing action during the slow times.... Can anybody help with me winter fishing for carp?

You have to find where there held up for the winter.  They stick together in cold water and dont move much.  Easier said than done.

You can't catch common carp after Oct. especially if the water is below 50 deg. F.  They bury themselves in the mud and hibernate for winter------I think we covered this earlier in the thread.

Hey, have ya ever tried bow-ice fishing for carp?  After ya shot 'em, you could just toss 'em and slide 'em across the ice-covered lake right into the woods.

Hi i'm on the Texas fishing forum and i'm going to be visiting my brother in law in Pittsburgh i would like to put his kids on some carp. I was thinking about fishing point state park but i would like to try a pay lake as i've never been. If anyone would be so kind as to tell me what pay lake i should fish ? I have some range cubes for chum. For bait i have some strawberry maize and some sweet corn maize made up. I'll be driving there in about 30 mins, It will only take me 20 hrs to get there. LOL. Anywhere around Penn hills or Pittsburgh would be good but obviously i'm willing to drive.
Any and all info is VERY appreciated!!

Thanks,

you want to fish a paylake for carp?

personally, I wouldn't pay to get a shot at such an accessible fish.  there are carp in just about every river and lake in the state.  if its action that is the big deal, I can't see how going to a paylake is going to make any difference.

the only appeal of a paylake might be either size or the payout for a big fish. (and both shouldn't matter much to a kid).

also, I think that paradise is like in somerset county , aprox 1hour east while a river is like easily within 15 minutes of any pittsburgh suburb.

just sayin'.

if you know the tackle and how to chum,  you have only to find the right kind of spot (current eddies) and do your thing.

ok, I never claimed to be at any of these spots.  the list on this webpage seems comprehensive but its missing paradise ?
http://pafeefishing.com/facility.html

surely paradise is one of the bigger ones because its talked about all the time.  According to the page, your closest pay lake (with carp) is seghi's which is a little over 1 hour south.

ok there is a more complete list here, http://www.fish.state.pa.us/lakesreg.htm.

Paradise lake  is in cardale PA and not too far from seghi's.  both are in fayette county.  anyone point is its a lot easier to get to the river.

it is quite a list isn't it?
from the fish commission,  there are 11 facilities/ponds in fayette county alone and 2 places in allegheny county

I think I shouldv'e left this thread alone.  I'm not an anti-pay lake, guy.  I just don't choose to fish them.

it is expensive enough to try to catch fish, without adding access fees.  also I thought that maybe the guy from texas was assuming that paylakes were the only reasonable place to find big carp.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

on the other hand, you don't need a license when you fish a pay-lake, do you?  that might make a difference for an out of town tourist.

I don't know.  what do you guys think?  should an out of town tourist (with kids) with an interest in carp seriously consider a pay-lake?? Isn't it like really hard to catch fish??   you guys are all being SO quiet.  and I have added nothing but opinion and some shoddy geography to the thread.

I don't even fish for carp.

You don't need a license to fish a pay lake. If an out of towner just
wanted to go get some fishing in and enjoy the outdoors, I would
recommend  a pay lake as long as their expectations aren't too high.
Most are tough fishing that 10% of the people catch 90% of the fish.

Fish for Anything:

Great Carp in the Allegheny River-- close to Pen Hills,  Try close to the dams,  The areated water is a plus in hot weather.  During the week you can get to the base of Lock 3.{south bank}  Lock master opens the gate around 7 AM closes around 3 PM.Drive dirt road to lock and park on the road.  Walk  to end of chamber and  scramble down the steep bank.  Chum heavy with corn. Bait with corn or dough ball.  May need a slipsinker due to current.  Do not just prop rods on forked stick unless you want to lose em-- use a good rod holder driven into the bank.  I used to flavor the dough ball with the Spray on crayfish fish attractant.  Takes a little effort to get to the spot but you will  often have it by your self.  Call Lockmaster at lock 3 before you go.  Loads of sauger and some nice small mouth possible on the right lure
