ADK Brookie trip w/ lots of pics

Well I had been waiting for about a year to get up to my buddy Scott's camp near Boonville. He has been telling me that the creeks around his camp were "loaded" with brookies...decent ones too. As Brookies are my favorite fish, and also happen to be the first fish I ever caught, I have a special place for them.

Anway, Got out of work early Friday, hit up a couple spots on the way into his camp. These holes looked great, but only produced a small brown

Saturday we got up early, and hiked the mile back behind his camp to the brookie water, here is what we came up on

A slow, very deep, meandering river. There were places where the water was over 10 feet deep!

And it was full of trout!!!!

First one of the day, and it also happened to be the most beautifully colored brookie I have ever seen!!

funny thing was that there was two distinct strains of char, with the colorfull one being obviously a straight brook trout, but there were other ones that we were catching, they were quite skinny, had a forked tail, and were finely spotted...but they had full vermiculations. If i didn't know any better, I would swear they were splake.

some others caught in the slow section

of course, they weren't all huge

We were running out of time, and Scotty mentioned that before we left camp, we HAD to fish the high falls. Hike down into the gorge, and this is the pool we come up on.

And of course it was loaded with brookies. I caught 8 brookies on my first 8 casts!!!

Our two biggest of the day came from this spot too

Those are awesome...  Within a few weeks I bet they'll be even MORE colorful!

Were you out in the "Boonville" south of Old Forge?  I was out there on Sunday and Monday too!

My old college buddy's parents have a place on "Snowbird Lake" which is fed (I believe) by Alder Creek.  I think the lake is actually in Forestport, but it's really close.  All I mustered were two tiny browns out of the lake, but the creek looked AWESOME for brookies...  I am glad YOU found 'em!

I wish I knew you were around- we could have crossed paths!

thats funny, we were actually about 20 minutes east of forestport on some dead end backroad! Yeah, we were pretty close. Too bad, there was plenty of fish to go around.

Are those first pics of the black river, used to do quite well there.

Good call. We fished below the dam right in forestport Friday afternoon. Its well fished spot, we saw 5 or 6 different groups of fisherman just for the hour we were there.
