This is a bit off topic and I have nothing against pinning for steelhead - but don't like to see pinning on wild trout streams. If I already have a 12' light spin rod with small diameter high frame guides couldn't I just use that rod and a good quality spin reel with 6# main line, a swivel, and another piece of 4# or 6# with a fly and be able to flip it out with a float and staggered BB's and achieve almost the same effect as a centerpin reel w/o the inherent line twisting? Thanks in advance.

What inherent line twisting are you talking about?

Oh, and some people just like to fish with a centerpin. It is entirely different than fishing with a spinning reel. As far as mechanics and fighting a fish goes.

When I fish still water with a centerpin, is it necessary? No. Is it fun? Yes.
I don't need any fancy shotting or floats to fish lakes with a centerpin, so it is the fun of fighting a fish with no drag, but your finger.

i dont kno much about center pinning but from what i can see it is very effective, and beside that it looks like a ton of fun. To catch a steelhead on a noodle rod with a drag is one thing. but to catch one without a drag would be crazy.

I have to wonder what the problem is as well. I have never used a pin but have bought a set-up in the off-season because of how well I've seen folks do with them on the Erie tribs, not just Elk either.
Why do some folks almost have a hatred of them?

because they are dorks

There really is no reason for hatred of the pin. It is a very effective tool. There is though a hatred of people who use the pin. Not so much a personal hatred, but more of a hatred for the actions of the pinners themselves. It is the actions of the pinner which puts the bad taste in my mouth.

Why did one pinner drift in front of you before? Because if one did chances are hes not on here and could care less about other people no different then a fly guy swining flies infront of people with no concern for anyone else. So... it seems that the hatred goes back and forth for really no reason only because you fished or had someone move in on you that didnt care about anyone else. So I say to you if you cant let stuff go then dont fish we're not all A**HOLES.

And once again we appreciate your 2 cents

what the hell difference does it make if I use my pin on wild trout waters? It's just a **** fishin' rod. I use it everywhere that I legally can and will continue to do so. I don't care who likes it and who doesn't. It's my choice.

it my singular dream to one day walk around a bend while fishing an erie trib, see swanger about 40 yds downstream, take up a spot, drift right down into your honey hole and have you watch my float disappear into the thick green water and watch the ensuing battle.

Good guess. Sure that has happened to me, pinner moving in on me and cutting off my rotation. But fly guys have done that as well. Burns me up just the same.I know all you are not like this and thats not the reason for my dislike towards the group. But thanks for trying. The problem is much deeper than that. Thanks for listening to my 2 cents.

Good for you Dru. Hope you feel real good about catching a rather easily tricked fish the easiest way possible. As you fight the fish I'll stand and watch and wait then continue with my day. Enjoy. By the way you will never catch me in PA. I took off the training wheels a long time ago. I suggest you do the same.

Ok I didnt want this to turn into a fight. But my reasons for wanting to center pin is that the people are more willing to help. Also i have had more fly fishermen scoff at me than center pinners. Not all fly fishermen are like this but some of the ones that i have meet have really turned me off about the sport.

Thats probably because flyfishermen are the highest ranking authority on the creeks.

Um..................probably not a good idea to be on your knees in Swingers presence.

If I remember correctly (the quote somehow disappeared), he invited someone to hold his "rod" because there was room for another hand.

Maybe it got removed because he propositioned someone?
