standard or weighted floats ?

Which do you guys prefer when pinning ? I like the weighted ones, and even make my own out of standard slip floats. I just wrap some lead wire around the bottom of the tube and cover it with superglue.

Mine are not really weighted but I use the ones modified with a steel extension on the stem like they show at quest.com on how to modify a drennan float. Not sure if it helps or not but it seems to work for me. It does add a little bit of weight so it sits up easier with less weight down at the fly/bait

I've never glued mine together. I just used a 1/32 inch drill bit and turned it by hand till i was in far enough. then just shoved the wire up in.

geez...all this fancy float rigging.  i use standard blackbird floats mostly, if i need some extra weight to stand it up, i put some shot at the base of it

So when the wire is in there, how do you attach it to the line that you are putting the float on?  Just curious

Also, you might want to think about making a prototype and calling a manufacturer if nobody else does this, seems like a good idea.

I use the smallest silicon gas line tubing you can find on the wire. The drennan assorted float cap package also has one color small enough to work but it slips more.

gotta love those ravens they seem to hold up a lot better then the clear plastic ones although I still like the drennan loafers. Theres a time and place for all of them.

Thats what I did, poke a small hole in the float, insert wire and wrap. I just added the glue so it wouldn't slide on the tube, plus it seals the hole in the float as well.

I use standard slip floats that the line goes all the way thru the float and a string bobber stop.

I tried the shrink tubing, it works great. But I found out this out the hard way, check the buoyancy of the float before you add the shrink tubing. I sealed some up and found out I had too much weight on them. The stuff is a pain to get off once it is heated and shrunk. But they look good and should work well.
    Thanks for the tip.

To much weight from using the wire in the bottom? I normally use the 2g float with about 4 1/2 inches of wire and each were ok.

I did have one time leak water thru the bottom and man did it cast well till it got to full of water to be effective. Took forever to shake the water out the small hole. I ended up having to set it on the window seal on the sunny side of the house till it completely dried inside so i could reseal it.

Weighting the float, IMO, defeats the whole purpose and limits the way you rig your entire presentation.  Thats why they use various gram floats which tip up vertically with less or more weight typically indicated by the "4.0 gram" or "5.2 gram" etc.  this gram is often misunderstood and thought to be the actual weight of the float.  In fact, its the weight neede to stand the float upright and usually float it to the bottom line of paint on the top of your float.  IMO if you're trying to add weight to the float to add less weight to the rig, you're probably fishing in slower water and really all you need is a smaller float which will allow for less weight.  Or are you trying to get further casts?

Bingo...would never need to use a "modified drennan" if correctly shotting the line.

and I like the weighted ones for super shallow drifts or for twitching for stripers
