bowhunting elephants

Go  on your search engine & look up "Woman bowhunting for elephants" I wanted to see if they had the video of the woman that I saw kill a elephant with a bow. Didn't find a video, just a couple of picts. but quit looking after i got disgusted with reading most of the negative comments that were posted on a couple of sites.Very few supported what I thought was a remarable feat when I saw it on T.V. I wonder how many of them would have the guts to try it,or even be able to pull her bow back. They must have missed seeing on the news what can happen when you get a elephant ****ed off when they were writing about how easy they thought it was to kill an elephant.  sam

It's fairly easy to get within 25yds and get an arrow in one. It's what happens after that that makes it interesting. Not a sport for the faint of heart.

I would be the guy that said "No Way" to shooting at giant critters with sticks and string and could be found sitting in camp around the fire with a cold long neck and admiring the unclothed local girls...

The thing that impressed me the most was the determination of that woman. They showed before & after picts. of her before she started to train & lift weights to be able to handle that bow. It was actualy amazing when you looked at her shoulders by the time she was done. Actualy the front was pretty nice also. lol  She certainly didn't take that trip lightly.  sam

Didn't see that one but did catch a few scenes this weekend when channel surfing of some guy and girl within 20 yds of a group of rhinos trying to get a shot.  Never stuck around for the kill shot on that one but they are just as if not more dangerous than the elephants.  Probably faster and certainly more nimble than the elephant.  I don't think I'd want part of either one.  I'll stick to deer, turkeys and possibly bear in the future.

How many pounds was she pulling and was it a recurve or compound?

Chuck Adams was asked by one african govt.  (forget which) to come over and test the viability of bowhunting elephant.  He used a heavy heavy bow.  built arrows which were 2317's with a 2117 stuffed inside for weight & spine and a very heavy broad head.  his shot did not kill the elephant and it was shot by the guide with a rifle.

He then took the rib cage and cut it out (skin on) and made many many more shots into it.  His determination was that the angle of the ribs would only allow 30% of the best placed shots to reach the vitals.  Not a viable option in his opinion.

Better too far back, than too far forward.

I am not sure, but I believe that Fred Bear killed an elephant with a long bow.

How long does it take an elephant to die after its shot with a bow?

If its quick, then I don't mind it. If it takes a days time I don't like the idea.I highly doubt a broadhead kills an elephant quickly.

My guess is someone will call me an anti before the end of the day.

According to several articles that were on that site, a well hit elephant will die in minutes. In this particular case they said that since it was getting late in the day that they left & came back the next morn. for thier own saftey. In most of the cases the meat belongs to the closest villages & the people are gratefull to get it, no matter what kind of animal.I saw a video years ago that showed Fred Bear killing a huge Brown Bear with his bow. He stated that if a animal is hit with a dble lung shot that it will die in 10-15 seconds. They then showed a stop watch on top of the screen that started when the bear was hit & as it ran off it died in that amount of time. Also on one of those sites they showed a huge bull elephant that I believe was shot by Tink , the manu. of scent prod. They had a whole mount made ,they est. the weight of just the hide at 2 tons. Can you imagine how big & thick the ribs are on this animal?Surely they would stop any arrow if hit. They said that this woman was using an 83# bow.  sam
