Any one ever fish for steel with the Sex Dungeon--Kelly Galloup streamer?

Ive bin lookin at big articulated type of streamers. (Kelly Galloup's) And has any of you ever fished in Erie for steel with these. I wanted to whip some up but im finding it hard to find instuctions on how to tye them. I wanted to try the "Sex Dungeon" , "Zoo Cougar" and maybe even a "Intruder" Type Pattern. If anyone has some experience with these plz post em up! thanks

I figured it would get me booted but it's a legit question. Just lookin for a different pattern to swing this fall.

I have had luck with something similar to the sex dungeon and Galloup's articulated butt monkey works good too. They are pretty simple patterns if you already tie articlulated flies. I figured out how to make them just by looking at a big picture of one. Not sure if I did it right, but that's why I said something similar. Articlulated bunny leeches, woolly buggers and other streamers made bigger and articulated work good for me. If you google intruder flies you can find some nice step by step instructions and videos. Hope this helps.

I've fished many in Michigan, none in PA. Another fantastic pattern is Kevin Feenstra's Emulator, Killer !

SD looks like a woolly bugger trying to mate with a marabou muddler, with a few streamer hackles and rubber legs thrown in for good measure. If I could spin deer hair, I'd try that one out just for the heck of it.

The variation of it that I tie uses a wool head, like a wool head sculpin. It has produced for several different species. Pretty good fly if you like to throw bigger stuff.

Methinks he's trying a little too hard to be an edgy fly fisherman with those names, but to each his own, I guess. The flies do look pretty cool.

Just started tying intruder type flies late last season for Ohio.  I haven't fished them much, they look good in teh water though.  And I'll be fishing them alot more this season.  Hopefully the ties get nicer too, like kjh said, more sparse.

D-Nymph...in that first one, did you clip the back of that ostrich herl? I've heard people say that's a no-no (clipping tails), but I've done it to buggers that had the marabou wrapping around the hook, and never seemed to turn off the fish. Any particular reason why you did that (if that is indeed what you did)?

Not once tied in, I don't clip.  I think that that particular bunch had some messed up tips that were stripped, or kinked or cracked and I probably snipped off the crappy parts.

    Paco,

Articulated streamers are the only type of streamers I fish in Erie. I tie them 4"-6" long, and mainly in white. Black, Olive, and Yellow have all caught fish, but White is 10:1 against the others. You really need to strip these to get the full effect of the fly. Here is the pic of the fly I use. 3 segments, 2 single hooks.

If you want to swing streamer type flies, Wooly buggers and small TRADITIONAL spey patterns in olive and drab yellow colors work good.

tie these on a 1/16 jig head and hold on.  longer patterns work well right thru the winter, open water of course

i tie one like the white one above but with about 1 inch of brown bucktail, then 3 inches of bright green marabou, always gets some of the hardest strikes and biggest fish.  won't get looks from every fish but ones that go after it go full on.  again on a jighead.

    Gotcha. Thanks.

I try to remember the little tying tips and tricks I pick up along the way, and I consider you to be pretty knowledgeable, so I figured I'd ask.

So the "Dungeon" is a winner for steel. I'll have whip a few up and post some pics. This is the model I'm baseing my tye off of.

And I'm also gonna try the "Zoo Cougar" also..

    Paco,

He ties another using rabbit strips and other stuff called an "articulated butt monkey". It's a pretty easy tie. It's caught some nice bass for me so far this year. Haven't tried it for steel yet but I will this year.

while anything works for erie Steelbows and their range of conditions.... I would never call those "steelhead flies"

i would say they are more for browns and bass... not "running" fish

Stripping large articulated streamers for steelhead never seems "right", but it is a great change from hooking fish after fish on eggs. The biggest advantage I have found is that 90% of the fish you catch are full of pi$$ and vinegar. They are the most aggressive and hardest fighting fish out of each school/pod.

I always try to leave a collar on any spun deer hair pattern, assuming it is the collar you are talking about since the head was trimmed with a razor. Reasoning: It gives the fly a tapered look, flows nicely with the shape, covers up any gaps in materials, and helps push a little water because of the profile.

The Dungeon is a tandem hook streamer, the front is 1 size larger than the stinger hook out back. Thats the way the pattern is tyied. It's not a intruder based pattern.

the ZC and SD are designed with materials (mallard flank , beads, hook type, and marabou) that prevent the tandem hooks from interfering with the fly

the fly FB posted has materials and design elements that make me think the front hook would become an issue while fishing

and with the fishing style he talked about... i was questioning why both hooks are need

I just finished my first "Dungeon", well here it is.

It's just shy of 4 inches long & the front portion of the fly got a little bigger than what I was lookin for but I think it turned out o.k. for the maiden voyage...
All I need is some hungery bass and steelhead to test 'em on
