i hate this deal with the emeralds. u pay so much money for them, yet if u breathe on them they will die.

Doesn't matter if they die they still outfish other live shiners if they are dead. If you keep the bubbles on em and throw in some ice occassionaly they will stay alive all day and all night.

Definately!  I went all out this year, I bought 2 minnow traps, a minnow siene (the 'lawful to use' umbrella style), a long handled net with a fine mesh, and a nice minnow bucket with an aerator.  Too bad nobody has any emeralds, I have found it tough to even catch them the past few weeks compared to earlier this spring.

To kingnuke32's point, yeah - even DEAD emeralds outfish other types of minnies hands down.. they must taste better or something.

Can you use river shiners from the Allegheny River watershed legally in lake erie?  Anyone ever try "river" shiners out there?  They work for everything on Kinzua and on the river, would think the perch would love them as well.  Heck, if you get the bigger ones, just cut them up in sections and use for cut bait on the hooks.  Don't see why it wouldn't work.

I agree emeralds a king hands down, but I've also caught perch & steelies on regular fathead minnows as well.

I've had decent luck, when unable to get emeralds, using goldens by tearing off a small piece of green twister tail and putting it on the hook before the minnow. But don't tell everybody

Try buying some medium fatheads at $12.00 a lb they work . buy a .50 tube of silver glitter and chum does the same thing frenzies the lil buggers. If demand drops price will eventually ; although I believe fatheads work just as well .

I think next time I'll call them on it.
We should get free goldens from them since the sign has been up for 2 years.
