summer on the J

I went fishing last night.  It was not very exciting.  The water is low and was 71.6 degrees at 7:00 pm.  We caught some nice fish on cahills after dusk.. they were sipping extremely lightly.  There was a bit of a spinner fall.

My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

Had pretty much the same expereince last week.

Went to a free stoner on Thursday or Friday and had a good time -- both stocked and wild fish.

Some would pounce on the #14 Adams out of hunger; others were riding high in feeding lies and it took #24 spinners on 7x to get a delicate rise; and I spotted a brown that looked like the size of a steelhead (obviously stocked breeder) that had no interest in anything I threw at it.

The big party is about finished here. The last few nights yielded only a few bugs coming or going. Only a few rises.
With the rains it was only possible to fish the yellow duuds a few times.
Maybe it will be a good year for terrestrial fishing with the creeks being fuller.

The major hatch window on the Little J opens the 2nd week of April and closes the 2nd week of June.

yep.   That about sums it up.  Terresterials can be fun, but it's on to summer steelhead and whitetailed deer now.

Of course, you can always be on the river at the butt crack of dawn in July and August hoping that those pepper grains called Tricos actually fall on the water for 20 minutes or so.

Then there are the rainy days during the fall with the hit or miss BWO's.

The big dance, however, is over.

    Gentlemen,
Like I have said before, time to break out the bunny leeches and dredge the holes and the bottom of the deeper stuff.  Fish the banks next to the springs.  Or just toss a big hares' ear down on Donnies' place.  Are we after fishing or dry fly esoterica.

I like this time of year fishing the LJ...... fewer high-holers, no crowds, the waters plenty cool for fish to be active, beetles close the bank, and iso's in the riffles......

    duncsdad,
Time to move further upstream,  Fish right below 100 springs or the silver bridge.  Although it isn't the "J" try the Bald Eagle out beyond Northwood.  Or hike way up the little fill and try for brookies, and rattlers.  The "J" right below Bells Run isn't bad either.  Another good evening spot, right before dusk:  Can you say Spaghetti Sauce?

Never abandon the dry fly! It's only just begun! Unfortunately I will be pot licking all next @ Assateague Island. Woe is me!

Actually, I pretty much stop trout fishing around this time of year anyway.

We are leaving for the Keys to fish for Tarpon in about 15 minutes and for some reason, I find it difficult to fish for trout when I get back.

    Hey Spoonj,
I 'm heading to Vegas for a week on Monday. Maybe I can bring you back something else.  But you have to keep it, and explain it.

    Indy,

It all depends on what you are talking about. I'm pretty sure that I would not want YOU to be the one who gave it to me.

Salmo bring back crabs from Assateaque= Good

The j has had good levels for the end of June.  Still a little brown last night.   Buddy caught a few biggens swinging black leeches yesterday.
