Want to

I would really like to start fly fishing, i want a rod that is versatile and can be fished for trout or bass. Also im only 15 so im on a small budget, i have been looking into a 5/6w made by martin.  Any tips or anything would be great, just message me if you don' want to say something on the board

    Kill,
The Martin set-up is perfectly adequate for a beginners' set-up and it has all the equipment you are going to need to get started.  Plus you can see what that type of outfit needs (leaders/tippett ect) and begin accumulating knowledge.  Now most of the martin set-ups I have seen are 5 wt.  I have seen a few 6-7 wt.  If you intend to go for bass I would recommend the 6-7 wt.  If you want to fish for smaller stuff just tie on a smaller tippett.
I would advise buying some good flies.  The lure (in my opinion)  and the way you present it is more important than the cost of your equipment.  If you are looking to step-up a bit I would recommend the Scientific Anglers bass combo.  Then reddington makes a more expensive combo.  If you wish you can send me your address by pm and I'll send you off a few flies that I know work.   Good luck in your new hobby.

Cortland has some good and relatively inexpensive products, many with a lifetime guarantee. You do not need an expensive reel, especially to start. It is very important to match the line with the rod. Read some books and articles, particularly on the fish you will be targeting. It's a never ending learning curve, but you will develop a "feel" that is right for you! Good luck!

Also, don't forget other methods of catching fish, i.e. spinning, baitcaster, etc. I always told my son - "use what works"!

dude how much are you looking to pay..i have two outfits i bought for $65 and less and they hand big steelies, carp, a couple pike, and some big bass! i would go 5,6,7 weight..berkley has some great fly rods you can buy at kmart for under $25..okuma has some great reels under $50 as well..if i were you id probably go 7 weight with a okuma which is the best for a cheaper reel..if you can get a pfluger trion

can't wait til the steelies run again! get to say the best two words put together in fishing "fish on!"

Thanks guys for the info, i will more than likely buy a martin set up on ebay and start out with that.  My dad used to be an avid fly fisherman but between work and watching my little brothers he doesn't really have time to show me all this stuff which is a bit of a downer but i can live with that.

Definitely. He might just be waiting on you to ask about something like this that he can share with you.

I bought a martin reel, it sucks, never again, could just be me, but the disc break system for the drag is either all or nothing, might be broke, it is no longer clicking, pretty peeved about it

I purchased an Okuma Sierra 4-5 for $50 from fishusa and have not had any problems yet, in fact, after using a battenkill, i prefer the sierra.
