ethics and spawning smallmouths

Wanted to know how everyone feels about fishing spawning beds.
I have done it, but always wonder if its "ethically correct".

Are there any Pa. Regulations against it ?   Thats part of your answer. The rest depends on your personal feelings, and if you think it is ethical or not.

PA laws say it's illegal to make REPEATED casts to a bed.

Ethically, I have no problem with catching a spawner if they are immediately released. I've watched hundreds of fish go straight back to the bed after being caught and released.

Gotta find deep water to get hogs like that...and they know better than to spawn while they're eating.

Ok,  Here's my take:  You should not fish for pre-spawn bass because it may stress them out and result in  spawning problems. You should not fish for spawning bass because it will disturb the nesting process and cause troubles with the amount of young that get hatched (gobies will eat all the eggs).  You shouldn't fish for post-spawn bass because they are tired out and the stress may kill or injure them causing a depleated fishey.  And you shouldn't fish for fall bass because then they are trying to put on weight for the winter and they're too easy to cach.
As a matter of fact. . . You should ONLY fish for any bass between the hours of 7am till 8:43 pm on the 12th of August when they are in the transition stage from post spawn and winter feeding.

The Gobies in Erie will destroy a bed full of eggs in the few minuets it takes you to reel it in, release it and then have it find it's way back to the nest.

OK, so for you guys that feel its wrong to fish during the spawn in Erie...what about outside that watershed? I've seen bluegill feeding on bass eggs.

How about the Bass Master Classic; they have had it at a lake during the spawn for the past couple years.  That can't be good for the lake; to take all of those bass off of their beds to the weigh-in which could be miles away.

BASS  Stands for:  Boring And Senseless Sport.  I wouldn't give a dime to their organization or watch any of their broadcasts.   I like to fish too much to bastardize  the very resource I'm supposed to be trying to protect.   Besides, if they didn't fish for spawning fish they would probably have weigh-ins in the 3 pound range.

    Indsguiz,
Do the Bass Tournaments end when the spawn is over ?  Or do they fish tournaments pretty much all year ?

    washdog,
I really don't have time or the desire to engage in a discussion of BASS except that here in the south there is some kind of tournament almost every week on every lake.  And even though I enjoy getting out in the boat; the actions of some (not all) but some, of the participants in these events disgusts me.  these include: using live bait, attempting to buy fish from other fishermen, running too fast, too close to other boats, running right up beside an anchored boat and basically fishing right in front of them, and even telling somebody that they had to move because "we're fishing a tournament".  So my opinions are mine if you like BASS more power to you.

    inds,

Why don't you tell us how you feel about BASS? haha!

Anglers (including myself) have been ripping bass off their beds for 100's of years. Is your bass population in your lake hurting? Guys, if we really wanted to, we could find something "unethical" about everything with reagrds to our sport.

Bottom line is, go fishing and stop worrying so much about the little things. In the mean time, I have some spawning and spawned out smallies to stick!!

    See ya!

For my fishing reports, product reviews, stories, and other nonsense...

    Guys,
Please don't get me wrong!  I enjoy bass fishing, and it's always c&R, (the c is small because I don't catch many)  My complaint is not with individuals my complaint is with the industry and the mind set of some folks within it.  Heck I'd love to fish with Mike or Slick any day of the week.  Just not in a tournament.
