Discount flies?

I generally tie most of the flies I use, except for the BH prince nymph. This is my bread & butter nymph that I use probably 90% of the time I'm nymphing. I do a lot deep nymphing, with a good bit of weight most of the time, so I go through quite a few flies at times. Instead of tying these, I'd rather just buy some cheap ones that I really don't care about losing.

So my question is. What is a good online discount fly shop that you can recommend?

I actually started tying because it saved money over buying, THEN I realized how much I enjoyed it.

Yeah, I suppose it would be cheaper to tie them myself, but usually when I tie for myself it's because I want a fly a certain way. Whether it's a dry on a extra fine wire hook or weight and crystal flash tied into wooly buggers. I also usually tie them to be fairly durable. None of these things are required of the BHPrince I'm looking to buy. I really don't get any big kick out of tying dozens of the same fly over and over again, knowing that a lot of them are going to be lost quickly.

There are a few of discount fly shops out there that sell these flies for 6 to 8 dollars a dozen. These are truly lesser quality flies that really don't compete directly with the higher quality flies sold at Fish USA. Like anything else, I'm sure some of the discount fly shops are better than others.

Sorry for any problems caused by me soliciting recommendations.

haha why would you buy a fly when you can tie it yourself?  You want a bunch of cheap princes that you dont care about losing?  your looking at 9 dollars worth of material for 100 flies you can lose the crap out of and not feel bad if you tie it yourself.  Heres an idea, when you are snagging up, take some weight off, it might just help you keep a full box.

I tend to agree. It is so easy to tie a fly why pay a fortune to buy them?

    Tying your own flies:

prince nymph/ bead head on a quality hook - about 10 minutes to tie, 35-40 cents for the hook, bead, materials.

If you tie for steelhead, It pays to tie on quality hooks, 2x heavy, Tiemco, Daiichi, Mustad signature, just to name a few.

You know there's an old saying, well maybe it's not an old saying, but there is a saying none the less. "The difference between a good nymph fisherman and a great nymph fisherman is a split shot". Now I'm not saying I'm a great nymph fisherman, or even a good one. The point is, if you're nymphing and you not getting hung up on the bottom from time to time, you're not nymphing right. This is especially true in cold water conditions, when the fish aren't very active and hugging the bottom. You may have to put the fly right on their nose for them to take it. Admittedly there are times when the fish are active and may go 3 feet to get to your fly, but more often than not, you have to go to them. The closer you get the fly to them, the odds that they will take it go up.

My object is not to come home with all the flies I left with, but to hook into a few fish.

Like I stated before, I don't really get a big kick out tying. I tie when I need to and I do place a value on my time. Occasionally I don't mind tying up something new or restocking some flies, but usually the occasion doesn't last long or come often enough.

hey i don't really understand, but whatever, you might not want to tie, but by the way you allegedly lose prince nymphs, it might be more cost effective to do so...

i do a lot of deep nymphing too, and i hardly lose any flies.......most of mine head up into the tree never to return.

Why it takes me 10 min. orr more to tie a simple nymph like a prince.

    Here's how I tie:
    1.  put the hook in the vise, start the thread, go fix a rum & coke.
    2.  tie in the biots, take a big sip of drink
    3.  wrap the abdomen, light a cigarette, check tv schedule, another sip of drink
    4.  do the thorax, refill glass, change tv channel
    5.  tie in the wing, light another cigarette, check tv again
    6.  maybe add 1 or 2 turns of hackle, finish the head and finish my drink, Done, only took  20 minutes to tie this fly.

Ever hit the Loyalhanna? I once got a fly hung up in a tree and when I pulled, I got back a full, 3 fly rig. Fur ant up top, then a coper john, then a little midge. Must have been pretty fresh too, because nothing was worn out, rusty, or tarnished. I think I still have the ant.
