Fly line help

Picking up a TFO 11' 7-weight switch rod.  Looking for suggestions on line for it.  Was told that a regular steelhead line would work, but would like some kind of feedback from anybody who has one or has used one.  I have a line I will use for normal overhand distance casting but would like something for the spey cast direction, just for the times when there is no backcasting room.  Thanks in advance!

    NORM!,
Any fly line that you would use in "normal" situations will do just fine every other time.  Unless you are into reeeaaallllyy long casts, like for bone fishing.   The changes in action in a line is more from the input you give the line from your rod.

Normal line will not be the best for this rod...

Where and how do you plan to use this rod?
    type of casting?
    type of flies?
    type of fish?

For what you want to do just over line it by one and you will be fine.

I am getting this rod mainly for fishing lakes. Flies will be 3-5" both weighted and unweighted.   I have a bad shoulder and like the idea of not having to double haul with the single handed rod in order to get long distance.  I casted one the other day and it was no effort to put a LONG line out.  I know the line that will go on it will be more than fine when it comes to two handed overhead distance casts but not sure if it will do the job for spey style casts.

Now that I know what that you are not going to just use this as an indicator set up I will help alittle more. You can not beat a compact skagit line for sunken anchor spey casts. Pretty easy to pick up and very fun to launch. Another line you may want to look into is RIO's outbound. From my understanding this line performs well single handed and 2 handed. I have never used it but I have heard good things.

The most important thing is to find the grain window of your rod and match a line to it. Call TFO and talk with sombody there about this, and I dont mean the broad answering the phone. Ask for a tech. They should be of most help. I would guess the grain window of your rod is around 350-475. Remember to allow some grains for a tip of t 11 or t 14 or whatever you are going to use to get down. Once TFO gives you some choices look into Red Shed Fly Shop. Sorry I am to lazy to give you the link, if you want to find it you will do the work. Poppy has many different spey lines that he will send out to you to try. You just have to pay shipping and return them. Try it before you buy it type thing. That way you dont have to spend a ton of money on lines that will not work for you or just simply dont like. Hope this helps and enjoy.

Thanks again Swinger!  Definately not getting this for an indicator set up.  Want it mainly for distance in lakes and for decent distance when I don't have alot of room for a backcast and for swingin tubes in some of the bigger rivers for smallmouth near my home.

Are you going to be looking into sinktips?
if so...like swinger said... look at the compact skagits

there are also switch specific lines...

the guys at TFO are super helpfull... so is speypages
do some research and think about what kind of casts you want to work on the stillwater

    but remember the 3-3.5 ratio
in general... you head and tip sould be 3 to 3.5 times the length of your rod

    Thanks swinger and KJH!
Talked to a tech at TFO.  He told me that my steelhead line will work for what i want to do.  Weight forward for distance and the long belly for spey style casting.  He recommended the RIO Outbound or the Airflo 40+ for exreme overhead distances.  Also recommended a skagit system  just got to remember to stay in the grain window and like KJH said the 3-3.5 ratio.  So I'm gonna stick to the line I have until I get comfortable with the two handed rod then get the other lines.  Thanks alot guys!
