im still working on the 2 big birds that i took the nephew after. smart , smart birds. i been trying different **** every day. i kill big birds every year. almost every year by the 2nd day. these guys are tuff. they stay in the tree every day until the hen gets there then flies rite to them and away they go. ive been set up where they can see my decoy, the hen comes along looks at decoys, a couple yelps, they fly down and there they go. there was 2 hens . 1 must be nesting cause cause shes gone. hoping the other will nest soon and they will be alone, i will be there to blast both of them with my extra tag.

akita,  careful with shooting both of them at once...  It is still illegal to take both birds at once in PA...  That said, take the decoy out of the picture, it may be getting you in trouble.  Early morning, go hunt different birds or go get breakfast.  Come back to these two smart ones a little later (9-10) should do it.  Start calling and walking, they will answer when you get near.  Set up immediately (no decoy).  Your next calls should be purrs, putts, and maybe a few 3 note yelps.  Other than that, shut up and keep them guessing.  When they commit, you will need no other calls other than a putt or two and perhaps a purr with a little leaf scratching.  Good Luck, Griffon.

akita,  just an fyi.  The biggest bird I ever killed (spurs and beard) fit the description of what you are saying.  I worked him for almost a season.  The day I killed him, he did the same thing as always.  He would gobble a couple of times and walk away.  At the time, I was guiding for a well known outfitter in upstate NY.  He frustrated me on a personal level, so on one of my days off, I went after him.  Much like I advised you, I didn't even go in the woods until after 9:30.  I heard him gobbling when I got to the woodlot, just like normal.  This time however, I did not respond.  I set up where he normally would strut and hang up.  I let out with one short yelp series and shut up.  10 minutes later he finally gobbled again, but this time closer.  I putted and purred a couple of times and never said another word.  He shut up for another 10 minutes and then gobbled again, closer still.  I never responded.  Two minutes later he gobbled, then gobbled again, then continued gobbling on a straight line until I killed him at 20 yards.  Being an upstate bird, he only weighed 20 lbs, but his hooks were each over 1 1/2" and his beard was a 13 inch rope.  To this day, that was my most memorable bird...

I only heard one gobbling this morning, and he was on the opposite ridge. He didn't sound off until 10:00. Beautiful day to be out, tho.

i know exactly where these birds hang out. that was my next plan, just go there and hang out for awhile. im going to give them a break for a couple days and try a different spot this morning. they are not really fustrating  me but making me do some extra home work and educating me. when i find a animal and put it on my to kill list, i dont give up. i stick with it and then when you finally figure it out its even that much better cause now i out smarted a smart animal or bird.

This was my first morning out. Birds gobbled for 20 minutes then shut up, never heard one after 6:15 AM. Hens were tight with the gobblers, could hear them also. Gonna have to get in tight with them.......or wait for a week or so to see if they disperse some.
