My two friends each got a bird. I took my little brother out.We saw 5 gobblers and 4 hens, but no shots. One gobbler had atleast  a 12'' beard. We had a small londbeard struttin with about a 7-8" beard come to 40 yards, but I told my brother to let it come a little closer, but it went behind some brush and started following a trail and we never had a better shot. So no shots but it was fun.     Timmy

We hunt a farm that is posted i don't think many people hunt there. The other spot with the 7 lb's is not posted so it's possible someone could be in there.I just have to set the coys up where we can see them an if someone is to to ambush them.Watch 4 lb's fight last night beside the house.

It is safe as long as you have your 100 sq.in. of orange where you hunt.
Don,t try to sneak after a bird.

i started killing more birds when i started going in real early. as long as you dont snap no sticks or make much noise you can sit right under them.they will be sleeping. while its all the way dark they are sleeping unless something wakes them up. if you know they are roosting there, go there in the middle of the day real quit and make it easier to get in closer with out making noise. snip branches and stuff. get a spot your going to sit. go in early, get the decoy where they will see it as soon as they get up. dont make no noise and dont move. they may fly strait inn.

The only thing truly amazing is the parents would take a 2 1/2 year old turkey hunting and let him or her shoot a gun. I beleive in teaching them a little early but come on. I think that it is a truly idiotic thing to do.

Well rollcaster.. YOU can think what you want. I worked with his dad and him for over two hours practicing calling, gobbling, being quiet, staying nearly motionless, shooting the gun, etc... everything it takes to turkey hunt. You're idotic part is what iritates me...he has great safe parents and the kids have no access whatsoever to any weapons and his dad and him are in complete control of the gun when the hunt is taking place. Idiotic is the person who hasn't seen anything and want's to comment.. such as yourself. Nothing against you or anybody else but I wouldn't believe it if I wouldn't see it for myself. The kid bears down and moves the gun up, down, and side to side to the targets and turkey and you can think what you want but that is amazing to me.

Sorry but rollcaster is right, while it may be great to take them with you at 2 years old that is to young to be shooting in the field. Its an accident waiting to happen.

It's not an accident waiting to happen. He's sitting on his dads lap with both of them in control of the gun.. people are real quick to jump and assume that whatever they think is the only way.

I don't think 2 hours of shooting practice is enough for a 10 year old before he goes hunting let alone a 2 year old. This to me sounds like the dad just wanted to kill a bird and saw a oppertunity in taking his way to young son. The more I think about it the worse I think it is. I have a 4 year old and a 2 year old and i would not take the 4 year old hunting yet, it is just to early. He is happy going fishing and soon enough he will hunt with me.

Should th PGC put a age limit on the mentor hunters?Sounds to me like dad wanted to get a head start.I guess he couldn't wait a week.

I don't know about a age limit, I guess it all depends on the matuity of the child. Some are probably ready at 9 or 10 and some not till 12 or older. I don't know if I am even a fan of the mentor program the way it is set up right now. I think they should have tried it a couple of years small game only, this would still get kids in the woods early and let them get used to the hunting scene. One thing for sure is that a 2 year old is not mature enough to be in the woods hunting anything, not to mention that the shock from a shotgun could really hurt a child that small, no matter how small of a gun 410 or whatever.

Like I said.. real quick to judge. I know what i've seen and done. By the way his dad has killed a longbeard every year since he was 12.. why kill a jake. His son wanted to go thought we'd work with him for two weeks.. not just 2 hrs. Like I said.. the kid bears down and move the gun himself while sitting on his dad's lap, not difficult to understand.

As long as dad takes the recoil.
A good way to ruin a young hunter is to hurt him,

Unless he is the worlds largest 2 year old, he can't hold the gun properly even if it is a youth gun. Also there is no way he can aim and even reach the trigger at the same time. Hey its not my kid so good luck to him. Your are the one that posted this so you kind of ask for the response you got. There is no way you could convince me that it is OK to take a 2 year old hunting and shooting a shotgun. This is what they make NERF toy guns for tell your friend to try one of these his kid might enjoy it more. Even most toy guns say 3 years or older.

Guys.. I'm not trying to argue or anything and this wasn't the responses I was expecting.. his dad does take the recoil of the gun and wears hearing protection. I didn't even think that this was something an almost 3 yearold could do.. but I've seen it.. without seeing it I know exactly where you are all coming from. Sorry if I offended or p.o. anybody.

Spooked our "guaranteed" birds as they were coming in to roost @ 8:15 friday night.  Went into a spot we hadn't scouted in 2 weeks saturday morning.  6 am all was still quiet, hit the hooter twice, nothing.  wait another 10 minutes, while getting text messages from 4 or 5 other guys who had birds tearing there heads off other places.  Packed up the blind, we took 10 steps and one cut loose.  Quick answer and the whole hillside explodes.   Rush job set up, and this is the result about 15 min later.  Really proud of the daughter.  Two really crappy (less than one inch beards) jakes showed up and marched all around the pretty boy, but with the 3 long beards strutting on the ridge above, she held out (with some encouragement).  20 1/2 lb.  10in beard.  Her first spring bird.

Better too far back, than too far forward.
