little juniata river green drake hatch

The hatch has been cancelled this year.  The bridge sparrows haven eaten all of them.

My reports and advice are for everyone to enjoy, not just the paying customers.

Sal, you'd want to head to Penns.  About June 3-4.   It's far more of a sight to see than actually fish.  Take some sulphurs, gray foxes.  Don't be surprised if fish aren't rising to the drakes.

This is actually a joke.  There has been some debate over the years why the green drakes don't hatch on the little J.  Someone said it was because of the area sparrows are eating all of them.    I like to remind some of the guys sometimes, for a laugh.

The lower J now gets a few, very few green drakes.  Spruce Creek actually had an impressive hatch of them last year.

Oh no! The hatch was cancelled!

why wasn't this featured in the "big browns on the little j" article from flyfisherman magazine? You know.... The one written by the same guy that brought us the article about fishing san Juan worms during the sulphurs.

Something tells me we'd get a good response from this post on FFP forum.

I also just heard the PFBC cancelled their stocking of Sulfurs this year on the J.  I guess we will still have the san juan worm hatch, right Drake?  Man it is gonna be a rough year down there.....

Haha. I fished Penns once about then. Crazy hatch mixed in with a Grey Fox spinnerfall. Crazy amount of bugs.
I only got one swipe on top. It was pretty cool.

I have never seen any carp.  Suckers are there, although nowhere near the numbers that SC has.  Everytime I fish with drake he seems to find a few suckers at the LJ!!

I am still waiting for the yuengling hatch.. Could u imagine? I would definetly stop fishing and take LOTS of samples. A American spirit spinner fall would be nice to top off things as well

Someone on a creek once asked me when the royal coachman's start to hatch.
I couldn't resist and told him he missed it by about a week, ( later on, I told him about the difference between fly names and insects.)

I almost forgot about the coachman hatch, that usually starts around the end of April if memory serves me correct.  My personal favorite on the LJ is the yellow humpy hatch.

I have not heard a story quite as good as yours, although I have heard "man we hit a great hatch of Adams down there" a couple of times.  I always reserved my thoughts for those fellas, I didn't want to bruise their egos too bad.

The san juan hatch is about 2 weeks after the green globug hatch, which is just before the comparadun hatch.

Ever fish the comparadun hatch? It's really neat to see the pheasant tails which were crawling around the rocks, emerge to the surface to hatch into the comparadun. It was in fly fisherman mag last month

Man- all kinds of bug stuff to learn here. Maybe we should write a book. On a side note I went to fish my pink flies yesterday & there was an all day long blanket hatch of Caddis. Freaking awesome, except the fish weren't on em'. WTF? I ended up going to a 2 fly system with a bead head Olive nymph & my version of a Tup's Indispensable.
I caught fish nymphing deep. They love that Tup's fly. This was a trial run & they catch fish just like old books say.
So anyhow the water was off color. Toward evening I caught a few on top with the EHC. Oh yeah- it was the Breeches.

You would think that if the bridge swallows ate all the green drakes that the PFBC would team up with the PGC and take some of the money earmarked for stocking yotes, pumas, and bigfeet (that is the proper plural of bigfoot) and stock some green drakes.

They could also stock some Grannoms, I didn't quite choke on them yesterday.

Now all we need is for the rain to cooperate and get the river under 300 in order to establish reliable feeding lanes.

With two more product lines transferring, I will have a lot of time to fish between job hunting.  My last day is May 1st.

That sucks DD. Sorry to hear about the job loss. Our new line was to start up in Feb. to make glass for the Freedom tower in NY. Well they sold the technology to China a few years back. Guess who got the low bid? I guess the company wins either way- they get a royalty on the stuff, but us pee ons get a longer layoff.
I hope to get back within the next week, or two.

It's raining like a hurricane here in Carlisle. I had planned to fish today figuring the weather man was wrong again. This time he was right- it's miserable out. The Breeches will be 3" vis. Yuck.

Thank you for the sentiment.  But I think it is for the best for me.  I may not find something that pays as well; I may not find something that pays what I made 10 years ago when I went there; heck, I may not find something that pays 1/2, but my happiness quotiant will skyrocket and I am willing to bet that I don't thow up blood, get nose bleeds, not sleep for 3 or 4 nights in a row, have eye twitching, numbness in my left arm, and chest pressure/pains either.

If you are out this way during the sulphurs, yell, we'll hit the river.

Sorry to hear about the job Shawn.

As you know, I've been through it twice in recent years and can say from experience that it can be a good thing.

Give me a call. We'll have to fish this week, since the river is back down.

I thank everyone for the well wishing.

The job thing is cool.  I have been hard at it at the same place for nearly 11 years and it was time to move on anyway.  My growth there was against a ceiling and the writing is on the wall that the end is near for those that remain.  I think I am just getting out ahead of the curve.

Everytime I have changed jobs, the result has been for the better.  I hope I can say that once again.

We'll need to hit the river next week.  Hopefully the rain this week won't blow it back out.

Now if I only had about a 9 month old Pointer puppy to work with while I job hunt....

Oh, well, I guess I will just sharpen up Dyson.  He has a few little issues before he can compete for a championship.  He will be hoping I get something soon, I will be working him so hard.
