Pine Creek

Was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to share or point me in the direction of some links/info about Pine Creek. When I was in high school my buddy and I made a few weekend trips out there and had a great time. Thought I read somewhere at one point on this board where somebody mentioned about it.  Was thinking of doin a camping/fishing trip. A mutual friend of ours is finally getting into fishing and he decided to do it right and get a fly rod. We thought this would be a great place to get em started. Any info appreciated as I will be looking as well

  Thanks

    This should help.

    http://www.flyfishingconnection.com/pinecreek.html

We're going to be fishing Kettle the second week of May. An annual tradition w/ my buddies. We'll be there for a week. We usually make it over to Pine Creek at least one day during the week. Wonder if they finally sold that store/fly shop in Slate Run yet.

Never spent more then a day fishing Pine. Breathtaking scenery. Always wanted to do a multi-day drift/camping trip. You will have access to miles of water that you could never fish wading. Have a super time, and please post your results.

What part of Kettle are you on? We take the camper to Ole Bull State Park. My second favorite campground in PA. Nice place. Ceramic showers are nicer than I have at home. Dolly (office secretary) is worth the trip all by herself. Sweeeet!

I digress. In Oleana you take SR 144 (or is it SR 44. Which ever one you are not traveling on) up the mountain. Drive I'm guessing 8 - 10 miles along the mountain top till you come to the last left turn before the Black Forest Inn. Take that road (unpaved) down the other side of the mountain (maybe 5 - 6 miles) to Slate Run. That's Pine Creek. Premier Pennsylvania fishing / camping / recreation area. It's a bit of a drive, but that's the beauty of it.

My dad and uncles used to have a cabin up on top of the mountain. It was an old CCC camp that was located on the Dyer Farm, just off of Robinson Rd. Oh, the memories of that place! Anyway, the place needed lots of work. Roof was leaking, roof rafters were rotting, floor had soft spots etc. Typical repairs for anyone that owns a cabin. The straw that broke the Camels back however was when the local township established a requirement that all cabins install new outhouses over concrete holding tanks. You also had to maintain a contract w/ a local honey dipper to pump the tank out every year. With the amount of use the cabin received (3 - 4 weeks a year) we/they wouldn't have filled that tank in a decade. Dad and his brothers were too old to take on that kind of work. Plus the expense was prohibitive. So they gave the cabin up. They never really owned it. They had a 99 year lease from the State.

The good news (I guess) is that the cabin is still standing. The State historical society moved the cabin onto the property of the Pennsylvania Lumberman's Museum down on SR 6 outside of Coudersport. The cabin has been lovingly restored (they put a fortune into it) and stands as a tribute to, and an example of the work that the CCC boys did back in 1933. I live in Pittsburgh, and many time when I'm visiting Potter County I'll take the longer route up there (along SR 6) just to pay a visit to the cabin. I see dad's (and uncles and cousins) footprints all over the place!

    Check out this site:

    www.slaterun.com

Nice shop. Nice people. They will do their best to assist you w/ hot flies, etc. However, as you would expect, the accesses points that they will put you onto are the same spots that everyone hits. Gotta spend time on the river to discover the best spots.

Early in the year is best time to fish.

Can't wait till May when we get up there.

sugarfuzz12. Sorry. No idea where you might find live minnows in that area. We're fly fishers, so live bait is not an issue. The only shop that I know of is down stream of Cross Fork. Can't remember the name of the place. Short Italian looking fella owns/runs the place. Lives in the back. Real nice guy. Couldn't be more helpful. He carries a lots of fishing stuff, but mostly fly fishing stuff.

I see guys using salted minnows on Kettle. Probably because they can't get live ones. Those stocked trout are so dumb, I don't think they know the diff. Don't remember ever seeing a minnow bucket.

When do you plan to go to Kettle?

probably not till may sometime i have a couple stretches of 3 days off work and going to try to turn them into 4.  i just started fly fishing a couple years ago and have been having some success up there my biggest problem is trying to match the hatch i still have trouble telling witch flys and nymphs are witch on the water and still not that great at tying flys other than cattis and sucker spawns.  i love that creek though every year ive gotten a trout 18 in or bigger but the nices was a 14 in native brook my buddies dad caught.

The hatch charts are very specific, but I have grown weary of them. Walk into any fly shop and check their bulletin board describing what flies are hot: pheasant tail, prince, sucker spawn, wooly buggers, elk hair caddis if they are rising. I'd add to that list the zebra nymph, green weenie, san juan worm. Best part of it is I can tie all of these well enough that I'm not embarrassed to fish them. I don't think you need to be to fussy w/ stocked fish. Throw junk.

We'll be at Ole Bull from Monday, 5/11 till Friday, 5/15. The are going to stock that section of Kettle on Friday, 5/8, so there should be lots-o-feesh. If you are going to be there any time during that stretch let me know. T.

Do that! Like to meet ya. I'll have at lease 3 other buddies w/ me. We have a good time. Fish, have a beer, burn some logs, retell the same old stories. Get the pic?? We usually fish the stretch of creek right behind the camp ground. Short walk from camp site. We also will head down to the FFO project. The Kettle Creek Water Shed group did a really nice job there.

Ahh we we curious about the beer part. I was under the assumption that most of the campgrounds were in the state park. Thanks for all the info we are still trying to decide where to camp.
       Thanks again!

In that area of the state, it's pretty hard to make a wrong choice, if you know what I mean.  Virtually every creek in the area is very nice.

Fishing Kettle in May I see lots of guys going turkey hunting in the morning and fishing in the afternoon. LIFE IS GOOD! I don't hunt very seriously any more. Dad and uncles are all gone. But dad left me his Winchester Model 70, and I take it for a walk every deer season. It's a good one. Contacted Winchester some years ago and they told me that the serial numbers on the rifle indicate that it was manufactured in 1948. That's two years older then me. A classic! I've selected a nephew to carry it after I'm gone. Hope it is never sold.
