Mossbergs 835's barrells are all backbored or "jugged". Its when the back 1/3 the barrell is cut slightly bigger than standard 12ga. inside dia. It helps with shot deformation, kinda like if you poured bee bee's in a funnel instead of trying to pour them into a strait walled pipe. They flow though the funnel smoother than they would through a the pipe.(less jamming) Less shot deformation = tighter patterns. They 835 xtra full chokes run from .710 to .685 inside dia. The 835's doesnt like too much choke. The older moss. (500's and the 9200's) werent backboard and you could get away with chokes as tight as .660 or evewn .655 but those were older guns were not back bored and matched the 12ga. boar dia. closer. Ive shot alot of different moss. 835 and I think if you stay between .70 and .68 you should be alright. There great guns , and there pretty easy to get a beach ball patern at 40 yrds. if not choose a differnt load its cheaper than a sleave job or new gun. Try win. sepreme 2oz. 5 shot 3 1/2 IN. load. It pretty unversal in in the 835's! Hope i could help. Keep me posted!

i love turkey hunting. i shoot a little older win.1300 and it has a great pattern with the tightest choke i could find. i got some guns but i never knew anything like that. that was really interesting. i never heard of that before. i just learned something. that was great.

I also have a Win 1300, Rem 870, 1100, 1187 and Ruger Red Label and have never had that problem.

I owned a few Mossbergs briefly but never patterned any of them.

PS: If you use steel shot with a very tight choke expect to see a bulge

If I suspect my gun is backbored, what can I do to compensate and get a tighter pattern?

You do not have to compensate at all it helps with patterns. The premise is that with less shot hitting the bore and the slower compaction of shot buy the longer forcing cone, there is  less distortion to the shot and wad, so the shot flys true, staying in the pattern. Often those pellets we see on the edge on the pattern are straying away are deformed pellets. Over boring(sometimes called back boring) and longer forcing cones both aid this. It all started with the sporting clays shooters back in the 40's and 50's

Not positive but i think you have it backwards. The last 1/3 of the barrel is over bored not the back portion of it.  You can feel this by running your hand on the barrel.  It helps with larger shot.

I stand corrected it is the front 3rd. Forcing cone is the back third of the barrel. I got 'em opposite. Thanks for pointing it out!

    chicken,
I have gone through a few different chokes for my 835/935 over the past few years.  I bought a pure gold turkey choke .680 and it shoots pretty good with the Winchester supreme.  I have to ask, are you sure you arent pulling the shots or have the scope mounted wrong?  I remember you having problems last year, or what that someone elses gun
