Scope for slug barrel???

I won a Mossberg at a gunbash that comes with a slug barrel.  I'm looking for a scope for it that I can just put the barrel on the receiver and go.  I like the "dot" scopes where you just put the dot on the target and shoot.  Can anybody recommend a brand and mounts?  I have no idea about this.

Thanx,

I'm not real familiar with dot scopes, but I'd doubt you can just put one on and go with a slug gun.  Probably would require the same sighting in as a regular scope.  But, I could be totally wrong on that and it wouldn't be the first time I've eaten crow on here.

Anyway, I've got a Mossberg 500 with a slug barrel.  I mounted a Nikon Pro Staff on it.  There are several different Pro Staff models, and I got one designed for a slug gun.  Most gun shops would have them I'm sure.  Not sure about the big box stores.  I'm far from being a gun smith, but I mounted it, bore sighted, and shot it in myself.  Very pleased with the results.  Shoots decent groups at 100 yards.  Have taken deer out to 80 with it.  Have taken three deer with it, and each has dropped in its tracks.

A word of caution.  If you think about shooting 3" magnum sabots, be prepared for some major recoil.  Not only do I find the 2 3/4 shoot better, but you'll just about get a detached retina from the 3" loads

Edit: Meant to say that the one I have is the cantilever model.  That made scope mounting very easy for me.  If it's not a cantilever barrel, forget everything I said.

Cantilever barrels have the scope mount attached and stay sighted in when you remove the barrel.
Sell your plain barrel before you shoot it and buy a cantilever barrle

I know I will have to sight it in, that's not an issue.  I was just looking for when I take that barrel off and put a new one on, it will still be zeroed in.

As far as slugs, I have heard that the 3 inchers are some of the most brutal things to a shoulder going, lol.  I will shoot both to see what shoots better.

MO, some good advise given by both parties.  You really don't need the 3" slugs at all.  Todays 2 3/4" slugs (particularly some of the better sabots) will consistently group less than 3" at 100 yards.  As for the barrel, pgh is right on the money with getting a cantilever.  It will always be more accurate than the best receiver mount.  On a personal note, the three best slugs I have seen for accuracy and performance are handsdown the Lightfields, The Federal Barnes X bullet, and the Hornady.  The Hornady doesn't have the hard hitting performance of the other two on game, but it more than makes up for it with accuracy (consistently producing <2" groups at 150 yards and flat out deadly to 200).  Good Luck.

As far as slugs, I have heard that the 3 inchers are some of the most brutal things to a shoulder going

If it is a semi you will feel a lot less recoil
If it has a recoil pad you will feel a lot less recoil
Pump shotguns without a recoil pad and 3" mags are not for whimps.

Just after high school I was hunting crows with a friend using my 1100 with heavy 3" mags.
My buddy needed more shells so I gave him some of mine to use in his single shot.

The metal but plate did quite a number on his shoulder and left quite a bruise.

I called him a girl and kept shooting

A 6lb single shot is way more brutal than an 8 1/2 lb auto

not to start an arguement but the way you guys say these guns shoot is why i don't understand all the threads that come one here about how shotgun only will reduce deer kill. from my understanding slug guns are very accurate and to me thats what it sounds like your saying?

A slug gun is normally accurate to 100 yards or more
A slug gun with a rifled barrel is probably good for 150+ yards depending on the shell

Your average shotgun with a regular barrel and bead front sight is good for about 50 yards max with a pumpkin ball or buck shot

A rifled choke tube is not a rifled barrel but may help some.

PS: Telling sugar that you can shoot out to 250 yards is not something that he needs to hear.
Yes- I know it is possible but not likely
My estimates above are for hunters with average or better shooting skill.

250 is really far i don't hunt near a spot were you can see a deer that far. i have always hunted with a rifle and the farthest shot i ever had on a deer was about 130

Just knowing this site I figured someone would tell you that they can shoot that far with a shotgun.

    MO -

I have used my Mossberg for 5 seasons so far, and change the barrels in and out all the time.  Never had a problem with losing my zero.  Of course, I always take it out for some shooting a few days before hunting with it just in case.

I have found in my gun that I get the best accuracy with the 2 3/4" Lightfields that Griffon mentioned.  Don't know if it's me flinching or the slug, but I did not shoot well with the 3" loads.  I tried a few different brands and a few different loads and settled on the Lightfields.  Every gun and every hunter are different.  But sighting in a slug gun with sabots ain't cheap.  Think the last couple boxes of Lightfield sabots I bought were about 8$ for 5 shells.

Bottom line though is to shoot it enough to get comfortable with it.  I have a 30.06 and the slug gun, but in most situations where I think shots will be at 100 yards or less, I'm likely to choose the slug gun, even though I don't hunt in special regs areas, because I'm more comfortable with it.

MO these guys are right on the Lightfields 2 3/4 Seem to be the best out of my slug gun too.Which i use a Winchester 1300 deluxe with a R-SQUARE mount. I have the Simmons dot scope and take if off a fair bit and always is on zero or just a click or two off. The 3" shell are a bit to much I think. 200 yards is not out of the question If your comfortable at that kind of distance. Myself I will not shoot a slug that far but 100 they are in the freezer LOL. The Simmons IS NOT MAGNIFIED so any thing out past a 100 yards target is covered up to much by the dot.

I shot it today with the fiber optic sight that came on the barrel.  At 50 yds I'm a foot low.  Is it just trajectory and drop or can it be that far off??

The sight is that far off
You need a lower front bead or raise the rear sight if there is one

Lightfields are sold at DSG, Gander Mtn.,BPS and Cabelas. I have used them for deer for many years and have not found any better slug. As far as scopes, I use a Leupold 2-7x33 with a heavy duplex rectical and it works great.

Lightfields are 12.99 at Gander right now for 5 rounds.  Bought 2 boxes.  You better believe I'm going to make each shot count.  No more "throwin lead".  WOW
