filet knife

I am in the market for a good filet knife.

I have been a rapalla product, and to be honest, I'm not that impressed.  it got dull quickly and despite my best effort isn't very sharp despite a lot of work with it on a arkansas sharpening stone.

after all its only a 10$ knife.  but the 'gist of the problem, is that I just don't what to look for.  one that's razor sharp, yes absolutely.  but I need a knife that can be kept razor sharp.

the only indicator of a quality knife, I got is price!  and oh my!! that make me a sucker for a bad deal.

... oh you have a 50$ knife ... I'll take it  ...[as someone pawns off a 10$ knife for 50$]...

so, how do you know a high quality blade (that will stay razor sharp), and do you have some brand names that have made a mark with high quality knifes??

Forschner (sp?) is a pretty decent hand knife...pretty reasonable knife as well. 15-30 dollars depending on what you want...

The Leech Lake Knife i have is incredible.  Very sharp very nice pice of cutlery, but i think it is over hyped.  It is more of a show piece than a fillet knife...

I would look at forschner or look into gettin yourself an electric knife...

I tend to like my rapalas and have been using them for 20 years or so.  I use the small one for panfish and the med. one for eyes.

I like the Forschners for bigger eyes but nothing beats a Rapala for taking off the skin or for perch.  Get a Lansky sharpener and you are good to go.

they also added another brand, dexter.

btw, eyesandgillz, mikelravy.  are you talking about that kind of knife when you mention rapalla??  perhaps, rapallas sell better knives than the stuff that you get at walmart...

I'm with eyesandgillz, have several and I always pick up my rapalas, small for small, medium for everything else. Both Walmart knives. I also have a presentation series from rapala. It's a little to stiff for me, but does keep it's edge a little longer. The key is the sharpener. I use a Henckle, a couple quick pulls thru it and you're ready for surgery !

I just use the standard wood handled rapalas from Wal Mart, @ick's sporting goods, Gander, wherever.  I never did like or got use to the plastic handled rapalas and only used them if that was all that was available.

By the way, I spent a couple years as a first mate on Erie plus running my dad's/my boat up there and have cleaned several hundred eyes from 17" to 10 lbrs all with the med. wood handled rapala.  For the price you can't beat it.  For me, it has the right amount of flex in the tip but still a good backbone near the back.  My hand never got tired holding it even after cleaning 48 eyes (6 lb avg.) at a time after some of our charters.  Back then, the capt. I worked for would let the customers keep the capts. and mates limits even though I am not so sure it was "by the book."  Everyone has their own preference though and I was never one to pay too much for a knife.  I'd rather buy lures!  :-)

I have been using a cutco fishermans solution for about 6 years and am very pleased with it. It adjusts from 6 inch's to 9 inch's, has a tail holder, sharping stone and line cutter on it. Not sure of the price because it was a gift. I have only sharpened it 3 times. One thing I use to do when I was younger is try to cut straight down on the scales. This would dull my knives very fast. I then learned to turn the blade towards the head of the fish and cut under the scales, what a difference in keeping a blade sharp.

Try a electric knife. way easier and much quicker they even seem to do a better job for me. I wouldnt buy a 12 volt or rechargable. I have a mister twister electric fishermen that works just fine. I do use all rapala knifes for non electric
