25 pound test dacron ice fishing line. The only reason for the 25 pound test was to take up more space with less line. I also only use 75 yards of my main line and refill the main line as needed. So far the original 75 yards is still on after 2 years.

Dacron=trouble. If it freezes(gets dunked) for any extended amount of time, the reel can/will blow apart from expansion. Go with mono. Ironhed

I have mono on one reel and dacron 20lb on the other. I think the mono torques the spool a little more than the dacron but have had no problems with either. You have to put tons and tons of mono on to fill the da** things though.. my 2 cents

ORIGINAL: dru2112 don't know if i'd put mono on a pinner spool. I've used Ande 16 pound as backing for the last 12 years with no ill effect, no warping or any kind of problems. I would have used heavier, but a very large spool of the 16 was what I had, so that's what I used. There are 3 different reels spooled up this way, all 3 were spooled once with backing that is still on, still the same stuff. I did make certain not to put much pressure on the backing when putting it on, I'd guess if you wrapped it too tight you could have issues ? There's maybe 75 yards of main line on top of the backing, I do keep the main line fresh and in good condition. When the 75 yards becomes maybe 30 I'll swap it out. After this many years and thousands of fish the backing seems to be handling the test of time well. Maybe 2 fish have gotten into the backing in all that time, but I must admit I've broken my share of leaders trying to put the brakes on a runner. Maybe the fish of a lifetime will prove that the backing is too old and got brittle, but I figure it hasn't seen much sunlight down there, and it is a form of plastic. Come to think of it, it has handled the fish of a lifetime OK .

How often do you need to change your backing I changed my mainline this year which was 2 years old the backing looked fine to me but I'm thinking I should have changed it?
