Pistol for hunting

I have killed may deer with the rifle and the bow but would like a new goal and I think that goal may be to carry a pistol.  I want to buy a pistol for protection that I can also use to kill a deer.  I want an open sight revolver.
Anyone have a certain size cal and/or model that they use or like.  I have not done my research yet but was thinking something smaller like a .38 but wanted to see what you guys thought.  I have shot two different .44 but that seems like a heavy gun, want something that I can carry and cover a lot of ground.  Thanks.

Those are nice guns, if I was getting one for deer hunting that would be a good choice. If your looking into a revolver I would recomend a 357, I have a 357 ruger and really like it. Also have a 38 in a touras, they make pretty decent guns too.

i have a ruger superblack hawlk in a .44 with a 7.5 in. barrel its not bad to carry hunting with the across the chest holster but it is too big to carry for protection.  for a protection/ hunting gun i would recomend a 357 with a smaller barrel

i hate to say it but a hunting gun and a concealed carry gun two differant animals.
for hunting i would go no smaller than and 8 3/8 in barrel in a 357 you want open sights? the longer barrel gives you a longer sight radius. But here is where the concealed comes in 8 3/8 barrel is way to big to conceal,as for a concealment weapon i would recommend the smith and wesson and buy the way the long barrel version is smith too! the model 60 smith detective special with a hammer is a real sweet piece to carry. And not only can you shooot 357's out of it but include the 38 the 38special the 38 +p and of course the 357 mag.the model 60 has a barrel length of 2 1/8 inches or snubby if you like also comes in a 3 or 4 inch. But we are talking in a street confrontation maybe a distance of 7 feet and hunting prob 60 yds tops for a clean kill hence the longer barrel and sight radius. just  my 2 cents but i hope i helped ya. remember silent souls leave 50 caliber holes got to love them snipers. if at first  you don't succeed RELOAD!

I didn't say these are the ten suggestions

    Thanks everyone for your input.

I have been looking at the contender and encore pistol for hunting only but think I want something I can carry all the time.  For hunting purposes it will only be brought out if I already have a buck down with the bow and just want to walk the woods and cover a lot of ground and if I see a deer close enough great if not I at least know where it is so I can come back with someone that has not got one yet that year.
Thanks again for your inputs, I think I need to look at the 357 more since most of you agreed it was a good choice and look at my options on barrel length.

If you get a contender, get one with a 10 inch barrel,I made the mistake and bought the super 16 1/4 inch barrel, and scoped it with a 2 to 7 burris, even put a bipod on it,shoots better than good 7/30 waters, but it a set up gun,I've smoked does over 100 yards on a set up,but missed them 30 yards off hand,to much gun to hold (16 inch barrel) I took  it out 2 years ago and missed the same doe three shots off hand 40 to 60 yards,I bought a stock and rifle scope and made a little carbine out of it,I sighted it in and it shoots great but didn't take it out this year The Ruger superblack hawk would be my choice,41,44,357 in that order, the 41 has alot less recoil than the 44 and will drop any deer,7.5 in barrel is nice.

i have a ruger superblack hawk in a 44 with the 7.5 in barrel and i am very happy with it. it shoots good and i don't think the recoil is as bad as ppl make it out to be.  i can hold it with one hand and shoot it with no problem

Just curious;  Why, with all the special seasons for all other types of weapons; the PGC never tried to include hand-guns into any of them. Maybe early muzzle-loader and hand-gun? With the cross-bow being included into archery; I think the PGC is in a desperation mode to keep people buying license.

here is my two cents. hunting gun and carry guns are two way different guns. i have a sw 460 for deer and i wouldnt trade it for any gun or caliber in the world... i started with a 44 and wound up losing a monster due to a terrible bullet and a missed placed shot. with the 460 there is no bad bullet and with the amount of shock that comes with impact your bullet placement has some room for error. as far as a personal defense gun, buy a glock, they just WORK. ( all the time ) this is just my unprofessional opinion, i have shot every make and model of glock and have never had a single misfire. 10 mm is my favorate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
