Did you ever fall through?

I fell through twice over the years, once at Dutch Fork with 2" at night close to shore, only up to knees, and once running across a swimming pool (also at night. no alcohol involved, lol.) I had to feel around for the spot I went in. Not fun. Anyone else ever take the plunge?

Last year at Lake Arthur ice was about 7+ inches and i tried to walk from the parking lot under the 522 bridge and i was walking towards the church and thought i had walked out far enough to miss the spring on the right side of the bridge. Well needless to say i never walked up far enough and thump straight through the ice ha needless to say i walked right back to the car warmed up for ten minutes and back onto the ice i went! i fished all day and caught one 3 inch bluegill! great luck eh

I personally have never fallen through and obviously don't want to, but I was talking to a guy from work who was walking across some ice while hunting (trying to take a short cut) and fell through.  He said that he fell about 10 feet and instead of hearing a splash he went "thud".  I guess the water had been drained and he had to yell to his buddy who broke through the ice near shore and he followed the light and made it out.  He said that he never went on ice again and to this day won't go near it.  In high school a friend tried to cross a frozen crick and went through, he never came back, still remember the phone call to this day...

I fell thru at Lake Arthur too. I was out to the left of the 528 launch. I stayed and fished too. I think I went thru where the creek channel is.

Only been ice fishing for 3 years. No fish is worth my life so I dont take any chances. Ive heard of people going through and thats not for me. Im kind of a  heavy weight ( 235 ) and I need good ice to even think about walking out on the ice. I love to fish and plan on it for many years to come so if im ever uncertain about the thickness of the ice I can wait.

Went through at Conneaut lake years ago. Ice was 10" or better. Weather had put down close to 3" on the way up, complrerly covering a BIG hole that some one made the day before. No creakin, no cracken, just "in you go". Thank God I was out with a friend and we had rope with us! And yeah, we stayed. Got some strange looks at the Burger King in Meadville as I was still peelin ice of my jumpsuit. You never know.

I fell through Tully Lake in Syracuse while coming off.  I stepped on a spring (rest of the lake had 2 ft. of ice) and went into 4 feet of water.  With temperatures at or below zero, the 1/2 mile walk out turned me into the Tin Man In The Rain... by the time I got to my truck.

I'm glad this topic was brought up...it will put it in everybody's mind to be safe on the ice....an older guy fell through the lake a couple years ago at Moraine, and didn't make it...he was fishing alone....it's a good idea to have a rope and those hand grip ice picks [don't recall the proper name for them at the moment]...be safe on the ice

while fishing with a buddy about ten years ago on the south end of pymy, i stood up to stretch my legs.  the wind grabbed the bucket i was sitting on and sent it tumbling north.  i chased the darned thing for at least a 1/4 mile before i caught up to it.  since i was closer to shore i decided to walk the shoreline back to where we were.  i was about ten feet off shore when i went through.  though i hardly got wet (up to my waist), my butt was in a puckered postion for at least six hours.  i have only been out once since that happened.

I was checking the ice at Wilhelm (Shantytown area) several years ago. I walked down over the hill with my auger, drilled, about 1 1/2 inches of ice. I turned around and started walking back up the hill, here comes a BIG guy walking down with all his equipment. I was concerned he'd have a heart attack walking back up from the lake, so I shouted at him that there was not enough ice to fish. He keeps on coming. We meet up, I told him there was only 1 1/2 inches. He said "Good, it built up some since last night". WTF? "Oh yeah, I fished last night". I told him he was crazy. He said he probably was as he went through last night and had a heck of a time getting out. I just shook my head and left.

Many, many years ago my dad and I were fishing on Horseshoe Bay in late March. Most of the bay was open. It was about 50 degrees and really windy. I kind of had a bad feeling when we pulled in and one of the houseboats had sunk. We were getting lots of fish, I wasn't paying much attention, when my dad told me to RUN!!! I start winding up my rod, he grabbed my coat and started pulling me. I grabbed my bucket, turned towards shore, and there was about a 3-foot break in the ice. We took off running and jumped the break. The Coast Guard had to rescue several people that day.

I carry a pair of el cheapo Phillips head screwdrivers with a hole drilled through each handle and a piece of parachute cord run through and knotted. I put the cord around my neck and carry the screwdrivers inside my coat. Long nails work also. Better to be safe than dead. Hypothermia is nothing to mess with.

Deerblazer, the only thing I lost was the jig on my rod as I had about 20 feet of line dragging behind me. Luckily I had everything else in the bucket. Had I had anything lying on the ice, it would have stayed. My dad had me by the collar and he was running faster than I was!

Rapala11, I mean this guy was HUGE! Well over 300, maybe 350 pounds. I just shook my head and got the heck out of there. Didn't want to participate in the body recovery.

I also saw an ice shanty on fire one time at Wilhelm, right at dark, about a mile downlake from me. That was kind of scary too.

About 33 years ago I wanted to go ice fishing on the bay, which for me at that time was the first time in Erie on hard water. Was told by a couple of fellows a good spot to fish out off Perry Mounument, heading out towards the Public Dock about 75 yards off shore and went through up to my waist. It was a long walk/run back to the parking lot, snow on the ground and was not sure if I should take my knee high boots off and run with my socks on. Just ran for the car and emptied out my boots in the lot.

That was some of the worst pain I had ever felt. I did not set foot on the ice for over 20 years. It was slush over the ice. I will not go out on the ice untill it is over 4" thick.
