Fish finder question

I have on of the portable humminbird fish finders and was wondering if I can use it through the ice since I don't own a flasher.  Anybody see any problems with doing this??

Thanks!  Figure it will at least give me an idea of the water depth even if it doesn't pick up th fish quite as well.

We have used ours in the past at times.  Definatly not as accurate as a flasher, or other sonar for ice fishing.  But it will show depth, and ours has marked fish at different depths.  Just be patient with it.  And keep using it.

Crappie i have used my portable to before. If you can find good clear patch of ice you can read the depth right through the ice without drilling holes. It really works , all you have to do is set the transducer down on the clear ice and it reads right through.

The only problem is the frigid water quickly saps the battery which is natural in cold weather.  Use it to check the depth, and then pull it out.
