USING BRAIDED LINES FOR STEEELHEAD?

I WAS THINKING ABOUT USING A BRAIDED LINE FOR STEELHEAD, LOWER THE DIA. AND UP THE POUNDAGE. I WAS GONNA TYE A BARREL SWIVEL AT END OF BRAID AND USE A 2 OR 3 FOOT PIECE OF FLORCARBON AS A LEADER BELOW IT. FOR A JIG SETUP

GOOD IDEA OF NOT?

same.

I do just that but, one thing you will notice is on the very cold days that ice forms on braided lines MUCH worse than floro or mono.

As dakotab states great idea once the freezing weather ends. It can be terrible stuff when the line is freezing.

I use powerpro on most of my reels.
    Love the sensitivity.
    Ice is a problem though.

    Like the others stated....

    NOT a cold water line!
And also...Unless you have a SUPER soft nooodle rod, you will break off more fish with braid!
No stretch lines don't have much business connected to 4 lb leader! (IMO)

I fish braid all year, but it goes in the closet for steelhead season!

For my fishing reports, product reviews, stories, and other nonsense...

I love Fireline for Chuckin in the lake. No need for a leader, tie direct ( they are NOT lne shy in this situation ). If you want to fish bait, or jigs ( in the lake, OR creeks ), then a leader is warranted. I've NEVER seen the need to go lower than 6lb. though. As for hook sets, you are not trying to drive #4 ( or bigger ) hook through a plastic, in cabage, or pads. A simple flip of the wrist, is plenty to set a small hook, into the soft mouth, of a Steelhead.

That about sums it up right there. Also, with braided having near zero stretch, small hooks will tear out and/or staighten a lot easier with braid than with mono.

I use it exclusively on the streams until it hits freezing then I switch to the float line. Attach 8# floro to it and do not break off many fish. If you have spare spools its easy enough to switch dependent on the weather, and it mends a lot easier than mono as well.

As already stated braid freezes very very very quickly.  With my musky gear in mid to late november i almost have to go back to mono.  I've had casting reels literally freeze up when i set them down for 10 min. or so.  Make a cast and you can't engage the reel, its a disaster....
