Ol fashion Fur tanning

I read an article online yesterday about Native American fur tanning. Pretty interesting. I am thing about doing my own deer hide next year just to give it a try instead of just tossing it out to waste. Anyway, the article stated that all the chemicals used in todays tanning process are substitute for the original product used to tan and preserve an animals hide, brain and water mixture. It stated that every animal has enough brain matter in it to tan its own hide besides a buffalo. Was curious if anyone here has ever tried this method or tanned their own hides. Ill find the article again and post it.

i tried with the stinky jar of tanning fluid i sent for. can't remember where i got it but it was original brain and oil matter. i'll see if i can dig up the tanning book i got the address from.
i didn't have much success, it is a long process.
i ended up just lyming the hair off the hide and made rawhide out of it. when wet it's plyable but when dried it hardens. worked neat making stuff out of it. i made a quiver for my sons arrows and knife handles.

    it's not luck
    if success is consistent

My buddy sends his furs to this place in Mn http://www.usafoxx.com/fur-tanning-pricelist.htm.  It is pretty cheap for a coyote or fox, but a deer cost a bit more.  They also can make the hides into different things like hats and gloves.  I think you have to call for a price though.
