Rules & Regs for 4 wheelers on PI Bay

Does anyone know for sure if you can drive a registered & insured 4 wheeler on the Presquisle Bay once the ice is thick enough? Or a snowmobile?

I had a friend of mine loose his snowmobile in MI and it cost him over $4000.00 for recovery and fines.
His insurance DID NOT cover any of it!

Not sure about the laws in PA, but Im sure you'll have to get it out if it fell in!
Why would you want to anyway? Just curious!

i am pretty sure you are allowed to take ATV's on the ice ONLY IF you enter from private property.

As far as i'm concerned keep them all off the ice. There's enough commotion without those things flying around....

Maybe people in PA just aren't accustomed to seeing quads or snowmobiles on the ice. But it is the norm, rather than the exception on the lakes I fish in NY.  Very rarely, when fishing, have I ever witnessed people on quads or snowmobiles flying around or causing problems just for the hell of it.  I'm sure it happens, but I have rarely seen it.  Usually it is guys chasing the walleye or perch bite around huge lakes like Champlain, that just simply can't be done on foot.  They move dozens of miles in a day and drill dozens of holes.  I see absolutely no problem with it and no reason why it would be illegal in PA...

Gas/oil leak?  Plus, the waters in Erie are small enough to keep them off.

You're worried about a potential gas/oil leak from a quad with a 4 liter gas tank falling through the ice, when there are tens of millions of tons of coal, chemicals, ore, oil etc. shipped through lake Erie every year?  Really?  How about old two stroke outboards, they leave an oil slick behind them...

There are 1,277,295,890,000,000,000,000,000 gallons of water in lake Erie (give or take a few, haha).  I am not proposing that anyone intentionally lose their quad through the ice, but in the unfortunate event that it was to happen, would it really be that big of a deal?  You're lying or fooling yourself if you think that it would.  How many boats are there on Lake Erie every year?  How many people **** in the water?  I'm sure that has a more substantial effect than less than 4 liters of gas getting into the water...

I just called the man and talked to him about atvs on the ice...
They are legal you just can't access the ice from their property(the state)..I asked specifically about PI Bay and he said it is legal but there is no place to get on...

Canadohta was legal as long as you access from private property...

Army Corps lakes are a nono..

I used to live very close to Oneida lake and it was always like a small city on the lake.  Those who did not use snowmobiles or atvs drove their trucks out if the ice was thick enough.  There was a guy who used to drop clients off at shanties via piper cub.  I miss that lake, what a walleye fishery.

    Griffon,

Those are my memories/experiences with fishing water (ice) like that, too.  I've seen guys build massive shanties and basically live in them all winter long.  They were half the size of my house...

Rediculous that they outlawed them at Kinzua.

I agree 100%, if there is 6 to 8 inches of ice on Kinzua they should be allowed. I am getting older and can't walk down the mountain like i used to, a 4 wheeler would come in handy.

Why would you be allowed to launch a boat from State property and not an ATV (sled,4-wheeler, etc.)????

yea guys will take their wheelers off the east side of the yacht club. But for some reason, snowmobiles I believe are not allowed on the bay whatsoever, might want to double check that though. Just becareful cuz those darn ice boats will cruise all over the darn place and zip by your hut as if your in their way!

The Chestnut St boat ramp is under lease for Presque Isle Sport from the Port Authority. Does this make it private property? If it is then I am sure they would have no objections.
