S-10, Ohio is really starting to rise up the charts, guys in Pa. still try and tell me Pa. is a big buck state. Yet they have NEVER hunted any where else. There loss I guess. I only wish I started hunting Ohio 20 years ago!!!!

I think that Missouri should be higher on the list....the top 3 states almost completely surround it.  I grew up in Missouri, but moved to PA when I was 11.  Never got the chance to hunt there but the mounts, stories, and pictures of all the hoss's that I have heard and seen from my family are enough to make me think it has to be one of the best big buck states.  One thing that could hold it back from being on the same level as Kansas and Illinios is pressure resulting less of a chance for deer to get into the 4 1/2 and 5 1/2 year old age group.  Seems like everyone I know from Missouri is a hunter!  One of these years I gotta make it back to the family farm for Rifle season with all my relatives.

Noplace---Ohio has always been in the top tier for big bucks. The only difference between now and when I started hunting there is in the last 20 years or so the number of total deer has increased by a bunch. When I started in the 70's we would drive around the block until we found a track. Then someone would run the track and we would set up to try an ambush. Now there are so many tracks you couldn't do it. Even with an exploading deer population they still rank number five. Pa hunters are told we have to kill off most of them to acheive the same thing. Wonder what would have happened if we kept doe season as it was and just went to AR. Think of it this way---based on the current numbers as compared to b4/HR every buck you saw last year would have been at least 2-1/2 and there would have been an equal amount of 1-1/2 year olds to boot. My regret in Ohio was most of my hunting was in the late season and I hunted at home during regular season.

That's why it is called one of the sleeper states. Texas is mostly pay to play and they promote it big time on tv and magazines to get the hunters(and their money) out there. In truth many of their bucks are nice 2-1/2 year old 8 points, like here but don't make P&Y, also like here. They do have some good ones if you have the money and those are the ones they show on the TV ads. If you have 12 grand you can get a 190+ class buck in Texas, also like here. There are also some refuge and other special draw hunts where you can get a good buck but most of there open land is full of hunters just like here. For really good bucks think fertle soil, crop fields, shotguns, thick brush. Texas is dry and brushy with not much cropland.

Something else to remember about Texas.  A large portion is high fenced and those deer cannot be registered in the P&Y books.  There are a couple of other states out there that don't make the list, but it doesn't mean they don't have very high quality deer.  In some cases, it means that hunters are targeting other species or there are fewer hunters to begin with.

Illinois doesn't surprise me. I spent a couple days there in September for work.  Drove from the Moline airport about an hour north to the company that I visited.  All that was there was corn and beans.  I was super excited to hopefully meet an avid hunter at our supplier that I could coerce into giving me some tips and or location/permission to hunt.  To my surprise, there was only 1 person in the company that hunted(about 100 or so people, a lot were women).  In talking to the fella, he was a hunter, but not insane like I would be if I lived there. I am going to do a little research and try to schedule the trip during a season and try to get a day or two of hunting next year.  We'll see how it goes.....

For now, I'll stay right here in good ol' PA.  Seen a few of them every year.

My first "dream" hunt will AK Yukon moose, with a bow.

Kansas.  Kansas has 141 pope and Young bucks listed in its latest record book and an average of 21,080 bow licenses sold, so the number of P&Y bucks taken per license sold is (on average) 1 in 149.

    danesdad,

Do you know how many bucks were harvested in the season?  That would be an even better number than 1/150.  Presumably less than 21,000 archers shot bucks this year.  If half did (which is a pretty high number) then you'd be talking 1/75.

    Thanks
    Rick
