Here in western PA, carp usually spawn in the late spring in the time frame  from mid May 'til mid June typically.  If the weather is cooler or warmer than usual, that time frame can be thrown off a couple of weeks either way.

The time frame is the accurate in the post.  On the allegheny they get active and you will notice them jumping and splashing around alot, trying to loosen their eggs up... they tend to be difficult to catch while spawning but very active after and even before the spawn...

I have a friend that fishes a local lake and starts fishing for carp in Feb. if it's not iced over. Last count I believe he has caught over 400 this past year(2008). Makes his own bait and does a lot of experimenting with different flavors. He releases them all. He's been know to catch a few of those hogs in Twin Lakes.

Congratulations Bill on catching all those Golden Bullets. You're a far more persistent carp fisherman than me.

I start stalking them on the creeks in March and even February.  Generally the first sunny and 50 degree days can bring a lot of activity.  Spawning usually takes place in late April to Mid may but may be later in lakes.  The creeks I fish warm up quickly due to shallow water.

The rivers I have fished the carp would find feeder creeks and go into them to spawn out of the main river. Smaller carp spawn shallower while the bigger ones spawn a bit deeper but not much.

Anyone ever go right after ice-out? Not that I usually take much away from tv shows but I saw Al Linder fishing a shallow bay just after ice-out and he was cleaning up.

Catman you can catch them year round just like any other fish. The one guy from another state ice fishes for them. I know my dad mainly fished for them in the summers but spring and fall always brings the largest ones. I am guessing you fish for catfish judging by your name. You can actually use a lot of the methods for carp the same as catfish and clean house. I showed my one friend last year the art of chumming properly and he caught cat after cat after cat. As far as ice out goes. I will go out as soon as the ice is gone but I wait for a few steady temp days and do well.

Anyone fly-fish for them?  I've heard its a real challenge, but I'd like to give it a try.  If any of you chase them with the long rod, what flies/tactics do you use?  I've actually never caught a carp before (havent used tactics for carp or fished to them, and I usually only fish bait about 3 weekends a year).

I remember last feb, or march( i cant remember) i went down to fish for walleye on the ohio and the creek i was fishing by was loaded with carp. Not sure if they were spawning or not, but there had to be a school or 70-80 of them swimming up and down the creek.
