French Creek!

Time to hit the creek again! Last night was slow a few Walleye, but things should get better as the creek levels off.

Man, I was up near Cochranton last week, it looked like a scene out of Hurrican Katrina archive footage.  I've never been up that way in the winter before, but now I know why people put their trailers on stilts up there.

It might be big enough to be called a river, but is a creek according this
definition. River is a large natural stream. Creek is a small to medium sized natural stream. Also by it's ranking. When two first-order streams come together, they form a second-order stream. When two second-order streams come together, they form a third-order stream. Streams of lower order joining a higher order stream do not change the order of the higher stream. Thus, if a first-order stream joins a second-order stream, it remains a second-order stream. It is not until a second-order stream combines with another second-order stream that it becomes a third-order stream.

If my memory serves me right there can be up to a 12th order stream. I think the Ohio is an 8th order, so that would make the Alleghney and the Mon 7th orders. So French would be a 6 or lower?

I found this on Wikipedia, but since it is Wikipedia take it with a grain of salt:

French Creek is a tributary of the Allegheny River in northwestern Pennsylvania and western New York in the United States. Creek is somewhat of a misnomer, as it is generally considered to be a river, which is reflected in earlier names for the stream.

It was known to Native Americans of the region as Onenge, meaning Otter. This was corrupted into English as the Venango River. A settlement at its mouth was likewise called Venango, and is the site of present-day Franklin, Pennsylvania.

Also I've read somewhere that some people consider the Mon to be a trib of the Allehgeny and hence there is no Ohio River but I cannot find a link

I say it's the West Branch of the Allegheny.  Looks just like the Allegheny, just a bit smaller.

Loby, I would like to team up with you someday.  It seems like you have some techniques I would like to see, and I have a couple of cold weather techniques that I would like to try that have been very good on other cold weather rivers.

Oh now there you go again Rap...  it seems to me that you Ohians are the ones with THE premier walleye river in the east.  You just have to learn to fish amongst the crowds.

Nice post on the history of French Creek and how it was named.  http://www.nature.org/wherewework/northamerica/states/pennsylvania/preserves/art9996.html
    http://www.wpconline.org/french_creek/about/index.html

As a property owner on French Creek I find those conservancy people to be a joke.  While they write eloquently, they do very little to help the creek except yak about how nice it is and how it needs saved.  Are they doing anything to "save" it?  Not that I know of.

Property owners who contact them are not answered.  Property they own is not taken care of.  For over a year a fallen tree had blocked the canoe access (the old one) at Utica.  When I got tired of seeing people having so much trouble launching I brought a chain saw and set the fallen tree free.

The "new" launch they wormed out of the people who built the new Utica bridge is almost worthless since it's far from the parking.

Just my opinion but I trust them about as much as I trust the PETA group.

Yep, Cochranton can be a catastrophe when French rises. Especially with this Cold rain crap.

Thank god I haven't been up there since Deer season.

    Loby,

You know you couldn't have landed those hawgs without a good net man  Maybe next time I can catch something other than lumber

    Griffon,

It doesn't seem like Loby has good techniques, he definitely has good techniques.  I was lucky to witness how good homework can pay off.

Thanks for the kind words! All it takes is scouting & experimenting with different techniques!

Trust me Cap, I don't doubt loby's abilities.  He seems to have them dialed in.  I am always willing to learn something new (particularly when it comes to walleyes).  I was not questioning him at all.

I've been reading this site for a few months and finally decided to join.  I was hoping you guys could tell me if you are fishing from a boat or from Shore.  How deep of water are you fishing?

Love the pics.  Takes me back to my teenage years catching walleyes at our camp below Utica.  When the water rised, it turned them on.  Haven't fished there since the early '70's.

I personally have only fished from shore, but would like to float the stream and try different spots.

The Allegheny was just a stream, and the Monogahela River flowed alone into Lake Erie until the last ice age blocked their flows northward, turning them both south to combine and form the Ohio River.

The Monogahela is a very ancient river, the Allegheny and Ohio are relative newcomers.
