Fishing the Little "J"

Gentlemen,
I am planning another looonnnngg trip up to central PA and I was wondering if anybody has fished the "J" between Bellewood and Spruce lately and what the conditions were.  Any positive reports?

The stretch from Tyrone down a few miles to where it crosses PA 453 is the best part of the stream...  I caught a dozen pellethead brown there earlier this year...  Lots of action...

Indsguiz, this is a great time of the year to hit the central PA streams. If your flyfishing, everything drake mentioned will work. If your spin fishing, try fishing a single egg or a nightcrawler. Fished recently with a single egg/noodle rod and honestly had insane action. And obviously, there is some HUGE fish in those places mentioned, as well as some other area streams. Good luck and have fun!!!

    Brown Trout,
Let me tell you about the "J"!  The biggest brown trout I've ever caught came out of the "J" at Pemberton, I won't say where but I was fishing BIG and the fish was right at 30"  and it was released.  This was before it was trophy waters like about 1974!  But for those who don't know, , , the "J" can get real deep, real fast, in some places, and the bottom is slippery.  Use studs!

That's definitley a beauty, there is alot more big WILD trout out there than what most fisherman will ever know! Congrats on your success.

I have caught some browns in the 28"+ range, but not 30", that is a whale.

    Yep,
Took a big Muddler Minnow about 4 feet down off of one of the cliffs.  Took it on the retrieve.  I thought I had hooked a tree limb or a root, or the bottom because the line didn't move.  It only started to move when I tried to break the line and my buddy noticed my line was moving upstream.  No crushing runs, no jumping; just pulling and the occasional severe head shake.  Took about 15 minutes or more to get him in.
That was back when the "J" was considered too polluted to fish.  Was a close-guarded secret for a few years.

Someone mentioned the section from tyrone to where the LJ crosses 453 is the best stretch. I gotta disagree. I'm on the LJ all the time, and I can't say any stretch is better than another. Actually I can say, the bellewood stretch is full of stockers, and the stretch just below where spruce dumps in has some of the SRC pelletheads. The rest of the creek is full of wild & fingerling stocked browns.

Indy, remind me just before you make the trip, and give you a good river report.

From Tyrone to Ironville, the J smells awful. Every House in Ironville dumps its septic right into the river. I used to love that section, but rarely fish it anymore. I usually go lower. I like it right around 305.

    ruready,
That's because there is a Regional Water treatment Facility just upstream from Ironsville, right across from Nealmont.  Beside that I think the entire area behind the feed mill is posted, isn't it?   I like the stretch below Birmingham myself.  Very difficult to get in to some of the spots and quite deep in some too.

Its just my opinion on the best stretch...  I landed several nice pellethead browns in there...  The part that runs through Rothrock is nice, too, but it gets pounded, not just by average Joes, but by guides with multiple clients too...  Since the whole Donny Beaver escapade, that section has gotten a lot of pub...

yeah Yough.   Ironville (where the J springs begin) is about 15 miles from Altoona.  Go 99 north, and take Tyrone exit .. route 453 south.  C&R section is 14.3 miles or something..

    Gentlemen,
You know it's funny but here we are discussing specific stretches and in some cases specific spots on the river and there's nobody yelling "Spot Burning"  or trying to convince us that there are no fish in that stretch.  Also, I might add, I have personally never seen a wannabee fishing the "J", unless it's with a guide.  Most of the folks who fish it with flies make me look like a beginner.
I watched a guy fish the stretch right above Nealmont (the flats) one time and his casts looked like something out of "Joan Rivers Runs Through It"!  And it wasn't just for show he was really getting into the fish.

that's because those who fish the LJ regularly realize that there is enough stream to accomodate all sorts of fishermen, and that most of the less knowledgable will fish closer to the easy access points.  Besides, those wild browns ain't stupid, and unless you're a fairly accomplished angler you probably aren't gonna do so well anyway....unless there's a cicada hatch!!  Hereby reserving my spot for 2025....

    Zug,
Don't crowd!  I Claim the stretch below the riding ring in Birmingham, at least down to the R.R. bridge.

OH  BTW the next year for the small hatch is 2010!

Hey Nothing says you can't toss a big black bug any other time.  Just put a little motion to it and hang on.  You ever get to the "Blue Hole"?  If you know where that is then you have really walked the "J".
