RE: pin in water
It probably doesn't hurt to get the reel wet, but if its below freezing the reel will probably freeze up quick. I know pins tend to freeze a little quicker with them being all aluminum frames and spools. As far as cleaning, depends what reel you have and how hard you fish it. If while fishing you set it down and theres anyway dirt can get in it you should clean it everytrip, if not every few trips should be fine. Most of the reels now the spools come off easy enough and cleaning them is less than a few minute ordeal.
