Ice Shanty's
I am looking to either get a Shapell 1.5 or a Frabill Commando shanty. Does anyone have one of these and which may be better? Thank you for your time.

i like the flip over stlye. i have a clam guide and i love it. the portability and set up are a breeze. i would get which ever one of those are the flip over kind

I haven't owned either of those two, but the shapells always looked a little better built to me.
Better too far back, than too far forward.

I've had three Shappell shanty's. The Dx3000 suitcase style which I bungeed on top of a jet sled. Still have it but rarely use it. Bought the Rover 1.0. Liked it but I felt a little cramped in it. It's only 33" wide where you sit. I had a nice swivel boat seat mounted and it was comfortable to sit just not wide enough for me. My friend bought it and loves it. So I then purchased the Rover 1.5 and it is what I use 95% ot the time. I really like it. Plenty of room for all my "stuff." Fairly light to drag and load in to the truck. Some very nice features and storage areas. Sets up quickly. Another friend has the Rover 2.0. It's a little too big and heavy for dragging through snow for one person. Bare ice no problem, but snow is a different story. Hope this helps. lou

Last year I switched over to a flip over shanty, it was the best investment that I made for ice fishing. Unlike a hut design you do not have to set poles and unfold a floor or worry about it blowing away if your not in it. The flip over makes you mobile. If you drill a hole and it is not producing fish you just flip it back and you are on your way to locate fish. Many times I dont even flip it over my hole, I will probe the hole with jigs and sonar to find out the bottom structure and to see if any fish are present. If I find a productive spot I flip the shelter over me with one hand, fire up the heater and fish away. Guess what, If that hole stops producing I turn off the heater, flip up the shanty and I am off again. When I was looking for a flip over shelter my main concern was weight. I went with the Fish Trap Pro, it is the roomiest of all one man shelters and only weighs in at around 40 lbs. If I were to buy a two man model it would have been the Frabill Trekker, it weighed in at about 71 lbs. For the kind of fishing that I do the one man is better for me. The Fish Trap Pro will fit another angler in a pinch.

i have a fish trap guide, and the scout..also the 5600, the ht tent, and a shapell...go fish trap guide its the best....you can find them a decent price....i saw one last week for 250 bucks.....i can pul the guide no problem loaded with power auger n all gear its the best you can get....

Hello all, Just joined this site, looks to be a good 'un! I'll have to agree that the Fish Trap flip overs are very well made. I own a Scout and it's so much better than the Shapell 3000 I used to own. Of course, it's kind of tight inside there, but it fits the way I fish. I also acquired recently, in a lot of used ice fishing gear, a Frabill Ranger Solo. That is also very nice with room to spare for one person and enough room to have two inside if need be. Anyway, great site! Bill

I have a Guide and pull the second seat out if I'm going solo. Lots of room for beer!

I have a Clam 5600 and have been thinking about selling it and going to the Clam Guide. How do you like your Guide? Is it ok to pull long distances? Do you have any suggestions on where I can buy the Guide?

This years Guide has a bench seat, mine is a few years old and has 2 swivel boat seats. Don't know if I would like the bench ? Got mine at Gander as a floor model , saved a few bucks cause one pole was bent. Deep snow is a bear to pull in, have to add hyfax runners or build a sled to get it up off the snow.
